The Opportunity
We are recruiting for a Chartered Senior Geotechnical Engineer to join an established civil and geotechnical engineering consultancy in Croydon.
This is an excellent opportunity for an experienced geotechnical engineer who is ready to take greater ownership of projects, manage a small developing team and progress towards a Principal Engineer position.
The successful candidate will lead geotechnical design work from concept through to detailed design, support commercial project delivery, contribute to fee proposals and client development, and help shape the growth of the Croydon geotechnical team.
You will have support from the wider geotechnical business while being given the autonomy to develop the local team and build your managerial and commercial experience.

The Role
As Senior Geotechnical Engineer, you will combine technical delivery with project management, commercial responsibility and team leadership.
You will initially manage and support a small geotechnical team in Croydon, with the opportunity to develop into a broader Principal Engineer role as the team grows.
Key Responsibilities
Geotechnical Design
- Undertake concept and detailed geotechnical design
- Identify key geotechnical risks and develop appropriate mitigation measures
- Carry out earthworks design
- Undertake slope stability assessments
- Complete shallow and piled foundation design
- Design soil nails and ground anchors
- Undertake gravity and embedded retaining wall design
- Apply Eurocode requirements and relevant UK design standards
- Produce clear technical calculations, drawings and sketches

Technical Reporting
- Prepare Ground Investigation Reports
- Prepare Geotechnical Design Reports
- Review and interpret ground investigation information
- Develop geotechnical parameters and design recommendations
- Produce technically clear and commercially focused reports
Project & Commercial Management
- Manage projects from initial brief through to technical delivery
- Balance technical quality with project profitability
- Monitor budgets, programmes and project performance
- Prepare fee proposals
- Support tenders and new work opportunities
- Maintain strong client relationships
- Contribute to repeat business and business development activity
Team Leadership
- Manage workload across the Croydon geotechnical team
- Support and mentor junior engineers
- Review technical work and maintain quality standards
- Assist with recruitment as the team grows
- Participate in interviews for junior and graduate engineers
- Support the wider UK geotechnical team as required
- Develop towards responsibility at Principal Engineer level
About You
We are seeking a technically strong and commercially aware geotechnical engineer who is ready to take on increased responsibility.
The successful candidate should be comfortable managing their own projects, reviewing the work of others and dealing directly with clients.
Essential Requirements
- Approximately 5-8+ years’ relevant UK geotechnical design experience
- Chartered Engineer status with the Institution of Civil Engineers or equivalent
- Degree in Civil Engineering, Geotechnical Engineering or a related discipline
- MSc in Geotechnical Engineering advantageous
- Proven UK project experience
- Strong geotechnical design capability
- Experience with foundations, retaining structures, earthworks and slope stability
- Knowledge of Eurocodes and CDM Regulations
- Strong technical report writing skills
- Experience managing projects and commercial performance
- Ability to prepare fee proposals
- Strong client-facing and communication skills
- Ability to supervise and mentor junior engineers
- Full UK driving licence
- Candidates must be eligible to work in the UK

- AutoCAD experience
- Experience using geotechnical design software
- Previous team management or mentoring responsibility
