Role: Senior Grid Engineer – Power Systems & Compliance

As a Senior Grid Engineer – Power Systems & Compliance, you will support the technical delivery, grid integration and compliance of Statkraft’s renewable energy and grid services portfolio, including Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), synchronous condensers, solar PV, wind and hybrid/co-located projects.

Responsibilities

  • Technical Leadership: Act as the day-to-day technical lead for assigned grid, power systems and compliance workstreams, working closely with project teams, consultants, OEMs, contractors and network operators.
  • Compliance Management: Lead and manage Grid Code and G99 compliance activities, translating connection and regulatory requirements into clear technical deliverables, compliance strategies and project programmes.
  • Power System Studies: Manage projects through power system studies, modelling, technical submissions, commissioning, compliance testing and final compliance acceptance, including EON, ION and FON processes where applicable.
  • Study Coordination: Define, coordinate and review power system study programmes, including load flow, fault level, reactive power, harmonics, power quality, stability, RMS, EMT and control interaction studies.
  • Consultant and OEM Review: Review and challenge consultant and OEM study methodologies, assumptions, models and results, assessing their impact on plant design, controls, commissioning and compliance.
  • Technical Engagement: Manage technical engagement with NESO, Transmission Owners and DNOs, coordinating technical submissions, responses, evidence and compliance close-out activities.
  • Control and Integration: Define and review plant control and integration requirements, including PPC/MPPC, EMS, BESS and grid-forming controls, AVR systems, synchronous condenser controls and network operator interfaces.
  • Project Support: Work closely with Project Managers and multidisciplinary engineering teams to identify and manage technical, programme and commercial risks, review designs and contractor submissions, and support procurement and tender evaluations.
  • Technical Leadership: Provide technical leadership throughout design, construction and commissioning, assessing the compliance impact of design or equipment changes and supporting the resolution of complex technical issues.
  • Guidance and Mentoring: Provide clear, practical and commercially aware engineering recommendations, supporting project handover into operations and providing technical guidance and mentoring to other engineers.

Qualifications

  • Educational Background: Degree in Electrical Engineering, Power Systems Engineering or a related discipline, or equivalent relevant industry experience.
  • Technical Experience: Strong experience within transmission-connected generation, energy storage, grid support technologies or major distribution-connected projects, with experience of Grid Code, G99 and network compliance.
  • GB Grid Code Expertise: Strong understanding of the GB Grid Code, with experience managing projects through power system studies, commissioning, compliance testing and final compliance acceptance.
  • Study Management: Demonstrable experience specifying, managing and reviewing power system studies and models, with the technical capability to challenge methodologies, assumptions, results and recommendations.
  • Knowledge Areas: Strong knowledge of voltage and reactive power control, frequency response, fault ride-through, fault levels, system stability, harmonics and power quality.
  • Technical Interfaces: Experience managing technical interfaces between consultants, OEMs, EPC contractors and network operators, alongside a good understanding of HV substations, transformers, protection, metering and control systems.
  • Relevant Technologies: Experience with one or more relevant technologies, including BESS, synchronous condensers, wind, solar PV or converter-based generation; hybrid/co-located and grid-forming BESS experience would be advantageous.
  • Modeling Tools: Experience with RMS and EMT models and tools such as PowerFactory, PSCAD, PSS®E or equivalent is desirable, although hands-on modelling expertise is not essential.
  • Compliance Processes: Knowledge or experience of NESO and DNO compliance processes, EON/ION/FON, UK standards and 132 kV, 275 kV and/or 400 kV connections would be advantageous.
  • Soft Skills: Strong technical communication, stakeholder management and decision-making skills, with the confidence to work independently, challenge technical assumptions and escalate significant issues when required; Chartered Engineer status or progress towards CEng would be advantageous.
