Job Summary
The Office for National Statistics (ONS) is the UK's largest producer of official statistics, employing over 5,000 colleagues. ONS data drives decisions on economic growth, population changes, and policy from housing to healthcare. Census 2031, our most ambitious data collection project, aims to capture a complete picture of everyone living in England and Wales. This role supports this project, ensuring no one is left uncounted and shaping how we understand and support our nation's future.
Job Description
Are you ready to shape the future of our nation? This role offers an opportunity to lead and coordinate health and safety for the Census 2027 Test field data collection operation and external community engagement events. You will ensure compliance with relevant H&S legislation and organisational policy, develop and embed effective Health and Safety processes, and oversee the Health and Safety of field operations and events.
Role Responsibilities
- Lead the development, implementation, assurance, and continuous improvement of Health and Safety arrangements.
- Provide expert health and safety advice to senior leaders, operational managers, and teams.
- Develop and maintain risk assessments, safe systems of work, guidance, controls, and implementation plans.
- Ensure effective controls are in place for key operational risks.
- Support statutory compliance and operational readiness.
- Oversee health and safety governance, conducting audits and assurance checks.
- Implement and oversee incident and near-miss management.
- Build and maintain effective relationships with internal and external stakeholders.
- Produce and present risk updates, assurance reports, and recommendations.
- Advise commercial colleagues on H&S requirements for Census contracts.

Compensation and Benefits
- Salary: £41,985
- Pension contribution: £12,163 towards the Civil Service Defined Benefit Pension scheme.

This role uses Success Profiles to assess Behaviours, Experience, and Technical skills. The process includes:
- Stage 1: Application based on work history, CV, skills, experience, and a personal statement.
- Stage 2: Interview assessing behaviours and technical skills using the Civil Service Success Profiles framework.
