The Role
Exciting opportunity for passionate motivated individual to join a dynamic multidisciplinary team.
Ward 3a is a busy acute inpatient ward which provides care for vulnerable children from across Scotland with highly complex needs across various specialties. Many learning and training opportunities exist in post, including long term ventilation skills, enteral feeding, monitoring and recording of vital signs. Our young people have many challenges and our team are honoured to be a small part of their lifelong journey. Candidates should have experience working with children and families and a keen interest in working with children with significant additional needs.
NHS Greater Glasgow and Clyde (NHSGGC) may be able to provide visa sponsorship for certain roles, subject to the post meeting the relevant eligibility criteria. Sponsorship is not guaranteed and will be determined on a case-by-case basis following interview and during the pre-employment verification process. Duration, Location, and Working Pattern
- Location: Based in Royal Hospital for Children
- Contract Type: Permanent
- Working Pattern: Part-time position (34.5 hours per week)
- Shift Pattern: Rotational 12-hour shifts
- Salary: Pro Rata for part-time hours
Key Responsibilities
- Demonstrates care and compassion to patients, carers and relatives to help ensure high quality person-centred patient care is delivered at all times.
- To carry out a range of assigned patient care tasks as directed by a Registered Nurse to ensure delivery of a high quality of patient care.
- To report observed changes in the patients’ physical/psychological needs to the Registered Nurse.
- Performs a range of tests and report results to Registered Nurse, e.g. urinalysis, blood pressure, pregnancy testing, patient observations and similar activities.
- Performs a range of patient care tasks e.g. wound observation and dressings, removal of peripheral cannula, stoma bag changing and enteral feeding and reports any issues to the Registered Nurse.
- Care for long-term tracheostomy ventilated patients within the hospital environment and out with for school/nursery/day trips. Including tracheostomy care, suctioning and monitoring of ventilation equipment.
- To deal with questions and enquiries from patients, carers and relatives e.g. on the patient’s condition or for any suggestions or complaints that they wish to raise. Where appropriate, refer these to a Registered Nurse.
- Assists with the safe transfer of all patients

Qualifications And Experience
- Training: Training is provided to enable the Senior HCSW to comply with the Mandatory Induction Standards for Healthcare Support Workers in Scotland 2020; and with the Code of Conduct for Healthcare Support Workers, both as amended from time to time.
- Long-term Ventilation and Tracheostomy Training: Provided at ward level. Undertake essential for role completion of competency-based Ventilation training programme within ward environment
- Qualifications: SVQ 3 qualification or equivalent knowledge gained in a relevant area through experience, on the job training and short courses.
Knowledge Required
- Understands and complies with HCSW mandatory induction standards and code of conduct.
- Completion and maintenance of statutory & mandatory learning activities.
- Awareness, understanding and compliance of policies and practices e.g. Escort Policy, Prevention and control of infection and Health and Safety.
- This post holder is therefore able to work within the scope of their practice under direct and indirect supervision by the registered nurse (training will be provided).
- Can demonstrate knowledge of equipment used within the department to support the registered nurse and ensure that they are compatible and in good working order. Will escalate any concerns to a registered nurse.

From 1 April 2026, the Agenda for Change full-time working week will reduce from 37 hours to 36 hours. Part-time working hours will be reduced on a pro-rata basis. A corresponding increase in the hourly rate will apply, ensuring that overall pay remains unchanged.
