Senior HSE Advisor

Location: South West England (TA21)
Salary and package: Dependant on Experience

The opportunity

Our client is an established highways contractor delivering specialist road marking, surfacing and highway safety services across the UK.

They are seeking an experienced Senior HSE Advisor to support safe operations across projects and depots. Working closely with operational managers, supervisors and site teams, you will provide practical health, safety and environmental advice and drive continuous improvement.

This is a hands-on opportunity for someone who builds strong relationships, understands operational challenges and confidently challenges unsafe practices.

Key responsibilities

  • Provide HSE advice and support to managers, employees and subcontractors across multiple locations.
  • Conduct site inspections, depot reviews and audits, ensuring corrective actions are completed.
  • Review and develop risk assessments, method statements and safe systems of work.
  • Support the management of risks associated with live traffic, vehicle and plant movements, hot materials, hazardous substances, manual handling and night working.
  • Investigate incidents and near misses, identify root causes and share lessons learned.
  • Deliver toolbox talks, safety briefings and training to operational teams.
  • Monitor HSE performance and provide clear reports and improvement recommendations.
  • Liaise with clients and principal contractors to maintain consistent safety standards.
  • Support environmental controls, including waste management, pollution prevention and spill response.
  • Maintain HSE records and support internal and external audits.
  • Support and develop HSE Systems
    • Coach operational teams and less experienced HSE colleagues.
    • Identify opportunities to reduce risk through improved equipment, processes and working methods.

Skills and experience

Essential

  • Experience in an HSE advisory role within highways, civil engineering, construction or a similar operational environment.
  • NEBOSH General or Construction Certificate, or an equivalent recognised qualification.
  • Strong knowledge of relevant UK health, safety and environmental requirements.
  • Experience conducting inspections, reviewing RAMS and investigating incidents.
  • Ability to provide clear, practical advice and influence colleagues at all levels.
  • Strong organisational skills and a proactive approach to improving safety.
  • Full UK driving licence and willingness to travel between operational locations.

Desirable

  • Experience in road marking, surfacing or highway maintenance.
  • NEBOSH Diploma or an equivalent higher-level qualification.
  • Relevant IOSH membership.
  • Experience supporting ISO 45001 and ISO 14001 management systems.
  • Understanding of traffic management interfaces and working alongside live carriageways.
  • Experience mentoring colleagues or coordinating HSE improvements across multiple sites.
