An exciting opportunity has become available for a Health Care Support Worker to join our Paediatric Outpatient Department at Westgate Children's Centre at Southmead Hospital.
Westgate Children's Centre provides a range of clinics for babies and children run by both North Bristol NHS Trust and University Hospitals Bristol NHS Foundation Trust, with experienced Children's Nurses and Doctors.
A Senior Healthcare Support Worker is a core member of the team delivering direct care to patients and supporting registered practitioners to deliver high quality, compassionate care to people in accordance with assessed needs and a care plan. You will carry out a range of clinical and non-clinical healthcare or therapeutic tasks, under the direct or indirect supervision of the registered healthcare practitioner.
The Senior HCSW role is a Band 3 role and previous healthcare experience, a Level 3 Healthcare Qualification and completion of functional skills are an essential requirement for direct entry into this role. Ideally this experience should be in an acute / hospital setting and paediatric experience is desirable.

Main duties of the job
Role
Working as a Healthcare Support Worker, you will be involved with direct patient care whilst maintaining the privacy and dignity of patients. You will be working alongside a Registered Nurse to provide a high level of care whilst caring out the following roles:
- Supporting children and their families
- Assisting with the checking of equipment in the department
- Performing height and weights and recording accurately
- Performing observations and escalating any concerns to a registered member of staff
- Providing distraction during phlebotomy
- Supporting the clinician to ensure their clinics run smoothly
- Welcoming people to the department and answering the telephone to ensure seamless running of the department

Essential criteria
- Level 3 Diploma in Healthcare or equivalent experience together with a Level 2 qualification
- Level 2 Functional Skills in Maths and English, GCSE or equivalent
- One of the following: Level 3 (SCQF – 6):
- City and Guilds 3, NVQ 3, BTEC National Diploma
- Experience equivalent to the above qualifications
- Level 2 Functional skills in English and Math’s, or equivalent
Work Experience
Essential criteria
- Experience of working within a team
- Experience of working as a healthcare assistant
Desirable criteria
- Experience of working within paediatrics
Knowledge and Experience

- Understand the need for strict confidentiality
- Excellent communication skills
