About the role...
We have an exciting opportunity for a Senior Highways Engineer to join WSP at a pivotal stage of growth in Gloucester. You'll become part of a highly collaborative and ambitious team delivering a diverse portfolio of highways, bridges and infrastructure projects that make a real difference to communities across the County.
Working closely with the Principal Highways Engineer, and our wider multi-disciplinary team, you will play a key role in the technical delivery of projects; contributing your expertise to ensure high-quality, efficient, and innovative design solutions. You will also support the development of our growing Highway Engineering design capability in Gloucester.

Key Responsibilities
- Developing highway designs on multi-disciplinary projects through various stages of the project lifecycle.
- Ensuring projects are delivered to programme, budget, technical standards, and legal requirements.
- Providing guidance and support to junior engineers and technicians, contributing to their professional development.
- Assisting Project Managers with planning, programming, technical input, pricing of project briefs, proposals, and cost estimation.
- Preparing and reviewing design documentation, drawings, reports, and technical submissions.
- Working across a portfolio of varied multi-disciplinary projects simultaneously.
- Coordinating with engineering and technician resources to deliver work packages effectively.
- Collaborating with clients, stakeholders, and internal teams to ensure successful project delivery.
- Supporting site-based activities on an ad hoc basis, including supervision and monitoring contractor compliance with contract requirements.
What we will be looking for you to demonstrate…
- A passion for design and a drive to develop innovative, practical engineering solutions.
- A degree in Civil Engineering or equivalent experience within a highway design environment.
- Chartered Engineer preferred or working towards IEng or CEng status with a relevant professional institution.
- Experience in multidisciplinary highway design across different project stages.
- Technical knowledge in areas such as road geometry, junction design, active travel schemes, drainage systems, road restraint systems, and traffic signs/road markings.
- Familiarity with relevant design standards including DMRB, Manual for Streets, TSRGD, and Local Authority guidance, including experience preparing drawings for Technical Approvals and Departures from Standards.
- Proficiency in relevant design software such as Autodesk Civil 3D, Bentley OpenRoads Designer, InfoDrainage and/or PDS.
- Understanding of Designer’s Duties under CDM regulations.
