The Institute of Astronomy is internationally recognised for excellence in research, education and discovery. Our success is built on exceptional people, and we're looking for an experienced HR professional to help create an environment where colleagues can do their best work.
This is an excellent opportunity for someone looking to broaden their HR experience within the University of Cambridge. Working as part of a collaborative Professional Services team, you'll provide high-quality HR advice and operational support across the full employee lifecycle, helping managers and colleagues navigate people matters with confidence while contributing to a positive and inclusive working environment.
Whether you're already working in HR within the University or are looking to bring your experience from another complex organisation, you'll find a varied role with genuine responsibility, opportunities to influence how services are delivered, and scope to continue developing your career.
About the role
Reporting to the Business Operations Manager, and working alongside another HR team member, you'll work closely with colleagues across the Institute and the University's central HR Division to deliver an efficient, professional and customer-focused HR service.
Your work will span the full employee lifecycle, including recruitment and onboarding, employee relations, contractual change, payroll administration, organisational change, immigration processes and workforce reporting. You'll also contribute to projects that support staff wellbeing, equality, diversity and inclusion, and continuous service improvement.
This is a role for someone who enjoys balancing operational delivery with professional advice, building trusted relationships and finding practical solutions to a wide variety of people matters.
About you
We're looking for someone who combines excellent organisational skills with sound HR judgement and a genuine commitment to providing an outstanding service.
You will have experience of working in a busy HR environment and be confident interpreting policies, managing competing priorities and building effective working relationships with colleagues at all levels.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
