The Role: Senior Health, Safety & Environment Advisor – Humber

Purpose:

To provide proactive, practical, and professional health and safety support to construction, engineering, infrastructure, and capital investment projects across the Humber Region. The post holder will support effective risk management throughout the project lifecycle, from concept and design through construction, commissioning, and handover.

The role will act as the construction health and safety subject matter expert, providing advice on the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015, contractor assurance, project governance, and high-risk construction activities.

Covering 4 x port locations; Hull, Immingham, Grimsby & Goole.

Accountabilities:

  • Provide competent health and safety advice to project teams throughout the project lifecycle.
  • Review risk assessments, method statements, construction phase plans, lifting plans, and safe systems of work.
  • Complete site inspections, audits, and assurance activities to verify compliance and the effectiveness of controls.
  • Provide specialist support for high-risk activities, including excavation, temporary works, lifting operations, work at height, confined spaces, electrical work, demolition, traffic management, and marine or waterside construction.
  • Provide expert advice on the Construction (Design and Management) Regulations 2015 and support the discharge of Client duties.
  • Monitor and provide assurance over Principal Designer and Principal Contractor arrangements and performance.
  • Facilitate design risk reviews, hazard elimination workshops, and lessons-learned reviews.
  • Participate in HAZID, HAZOP, and other structured project risk assessment processes where required.
  • Undertake contractor audits, inspections, and performance reviews, ensuring deficiencies are addressed promptly.
  • Advise on permit-to-work, isolation, site induction, supervision, and interface arrangements.
  • Develop and deliver a risk-based project assurance plan.
  • Investigate incidents, near misses, and dangerous occurrences, supporting robust root cause analysis and corrective actions.
  • Maintain accurate project health and safety records, action trackers, reports, and performance information.
  • Identify trends, emerging risks, and improvement opportunities, escalating significant concerns appropriately.

Skills, Experience, Qualifications & Competencies:

  • A recognised health and safety qualification (Bsc. NEBOSH Diploma, NVQ level 6, or equivalent)
  • NEBOSH Health and Safety Management for Construction qualification, or the former NEBOSH Construction Certificate
  • Proven experience in delivering construction project safety, CDM compliance, and associated HS&E programmes.
  • SMSTS, Temporary Works Coordinator or Supervisor, Principal Designer, lifting operations, or relevant environmental qualification
  • Working knowledge of relevant legislation and standards, including work at height, LOLER, PUWER, confined spaces, temporary works, and workplace transport.
  • Advanced knowledge of construction safety, HSE regulations, including CDM 2015, and a solid understanding of behavioural safety principles.
  • A current UK driving license and ability to travel for site visits

Ideal:

  • Chartered Membership of IOSH.
  • Experience in ports, marine construction, rail, utilities, heavy industry, or other operationally complex environments.
