Company Description

The Embassy of the United States of America in London, together with Consulates General in Edinburgh, Belfast, and Hamilton (Bermuda), represents the U.S. government in the United Kingdom.

The Embassy is located in the modern Nine Elms district, in a welcoming, safe, and energy-efficient building designed as a 21st-century diplomatic hub overlooking the River Thames.

The U.S. Mission in the UK is one of the largest worldwide, comprising 49 U.S. government entities and employing over 1,000 staff, reflecting the depth of the U.S.–UK partnership.

Locally employed staff play a key role in supporting diplomatic, consular, and administrative functions across the Mission. This role is part of the locally employed workforce in the United Kingdom.

Job Overview

The Senior IT Systems Administrator serves as a key technical expert on the London Croughton Annex's Diplomatic Technology (DT) team, providing advanced IT and network support.

This role manages and secures network infrastructure, administers on-premises and cloud-based systems, and ensures the confidentiality, integrity, and availability of IT services.

The position provides senior-level (Tier 2/3) technical support, mentors junior staff, and serves as an escalation point for critical issues, working closely with regional and Washington-based teams on network design, optimization, and security initiatives.

Major Duties & Responsibilities

  • Systems & Access Management: Administer user accounts, permissions, and access across networks, cloud platforms, and voice/communication systems.
  • Technical Support: Provide advanced (Tier 2/3) troubleshooting for customers, resolving complex network and application issues.
  • Mobile & Remote Access: Manage enterprise mobile device programs, remote access solutions, and compliance standards.
  • Data & Automation: Support ticketing systems with reporting, dashboards, and automation solutions.
  • Software & Systems Evaluation: Lead software deployments and evaluate new technology solutions, including cybersecurity risk assessments.
  • Audio/Visual Support: Design and manage A/V and multimedia systems for Mission events and broadcasts.
  • Network Engineering: Plan, install, configure, and maintain network infrastructure, including security appliances, wireless systems, and voice/data cabling.
  • Network Performance: Monitor system health, troubleshoot issues, and manage backup/recovery operations.
  • Cybersecurity: Support the Information System Security Officer (ISSO) in maintaining strong security compliance and monitoring practices.
  • Training & Mentorship: Develop technical skills, cross-train colleagues, and mentor other Diplomatic Technology staff.
  • Projects & VIP Support: Manage IT projects, budgets, and lifecycle planning; provide dedicated IT support for VIP/VVIP visits.

Qualifications

Experience

For the experience and education requirements, applicants must meet either Option 1 or Option 2.

OPTION 1

  • EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 5 years working experience in computer networking operations, network management, or utilization of computer systems.
  • EDUCATION: Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Information Systems, Electrical Engineering, Library and Data Science/Analytics, or Audio/Visual Communications and Technology is required.

OPTION 2

  • EXPERIENCE: A minimum of 8 years working experience in computer networking operations, network management, or utilization of computer systems.
  • EDUCATION: Completion of Secondary school is required.

Language: Fluent English; speaking/reading/writing.

  • Knowledge of network protocols (e.g., LAN, WAN, WLAN), traffic flow (TCP/IP), the OSI Model, and bandwidth management.
  • Familiarity with various communications media, including telephone, satellite, fiber, and wireless technologies—as well as core telecommunications concepts and remote access technology.

Network Equipment and Server Administration:

  • Knowledge of network hardware (routers, switches, firewalls, servers) and server administration/systems engineering fundamentals.

Risk Management & Privacy:

  • Understanding of risk assessment and mitigation methods, systems performance monitoring, and data privacy principles.

Cybersecurity Knowledge:

  • Familiarity with cybersecurity principles and threats, including firewalls, encryption, network security architecture, and VPN security.

Cloud & Productivity Tools:

  • Familiarity with cloud platforms and office productivity suites (e.g., Microsoft O365, Google Workspace).

IT Customer Service:

  • Knowledge of customer service best practices for supporting users with Department of State systems.

Skills And Abilities

Technical and Problem-Solving Skills

  • Ability to provide Tier 2 support for IT platforms and mobile devices, troubleshoot technical issues, and implement effective solutions, using strong problem-solving skills.
  • Proficiency with common OS commands, network tools, and network equipment (routers, switches, firewalls, servers).
  • Familiarity with office productivity suites (e.g., Microsoft 365, Google Workspace).
  • Ability to obtain relevant IT certifications from internationally recognized certification bodies, as appropriate to the role.

Interpersonal Skills

  • Strong communication skills and the ability to work effectively with people of diverse cultural backgrounds, technical expertise, and seniority levels.
