Senior Infrastructure Engineer – VMware | Data Centre | Pre-Production Infrastructure
£580 Per Day - INSIDE IR35
3 Days a Week Leeds | 2 Days Remote
We're supporting a leading banking client in the search for a Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join their Data Centre Engineering team.
This is a highly technical, hands-on role responsible for designing, building, validating and testing enterprise infrastructure solutions within dedicated lab and pre-production environments, ensuring platforms are fully tested and production-ready before deployment into live services.
The successful candidate will bring deep VMware expertise, strong Data Centre infrastructure experience, enterprise storage knowledge, and a proven background delivering resilient, highly available infrastructure within large-scale environments.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, build and maintain enterprise infrastructure solutions across dedicated lab and pre-production environments.
- Lead the validation, testing and certification of infrastructure changes prior to production implementation.
- Build, configure and administer enterprise VMware environments, ensuring stability, performance and resilience.
- Manage and support VMware technologies including:
- VMware vSphere
- ESXi
- vCenter
- vMotion
- Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS)
- High Availability (HA)
- Resource allocation and performance optimisation
- Work across compute, virtualisation and storage platforms to deliver robust infrastructure solutions.
- Configure, administer and troubleshoot enterprise Storage Area Networks (SAN), including:
- Storage provisioning
- Multipathing
- Storage connectivity
- Performance monitoring and optimisation
- Access management
- Validate infrastructure changes within controlled pre-production environments, identifying issues before production deployment.
- Support server hardware platforms and Data Centre technologies across Dell, HPE and Lenovo infrastructure.
- Produce technical documentation, implementation procedures, validation reports and engineering standards.
- Troubleshoot complex infrastructure issues across VMware, Windows Server, storage and physical server platforms.
- Work closely with Infrastructure, Engineering, Architecture and Data Centre teams to deliver critical infrastructure projects.
- Contribute to continual improvement of enterprise infrastructure standards, resilience and operational best practice.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Proven experience working as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Senior VMware Engineer, Infrastructure Specialist or Data Centre Infrastructure Engineer within large enterprise environments.
- Extensive hands-on experience administering enterprise VMware platforms, including:
- VMware vSphere
- ESXi
- vCenter
- vMotion
- DRS
- High Availability (HA)
- Cluster administration and resource management
- Strong experience supporting enterprise lab, test or pre-production infrastructure environments.
- Solid Data Centre engineering experience across compute, virtualisation and storage technologies.
- Strong enterprise Storage & SAN administration experience, including:
- SMB / NFS
- Multipathing
- Storage provisioning
- Storage performance troubleshooting
- Storage connectivity validation
- Experience managing enterprise server hardware platforms including:
- Dell iDRAC
- HPE iLO
- Lenovo XClarity
- Strong Windows Server administration experience (2016, 2019 & 2022).
- Good understanding of networking fundamentals, including VLANs, TCP/IP, DNS and infrastructure connectivity troubleshooting.
- Excellent analytical, troubleshooting and root cause investigation skills.
- Experience working within structured change management and enterprise engineering processes.
- Ability to operate independently while collaborating effectively with cross-functional infrastructure and engineering teams.

Desirable
- Experience within banking, financial services or other highly regulated enterprise environments.
- Previous experience working in Data Centre Engineering or Infrastructure Engineering teams supporting mission-critical platforms.
- Knowledge of infrastructure automation using PowerShell, VMware PowerCLI or similar scripting technologies.
- Exposure to enterprise monitoring, capacity planning and infrastructure performance management.
- Familiarity with ITIL-based change, release and incident management processes.
