Location: This role will be based in TfL data centres in Surrey and London and office locations within the TfL operating area.

This is not a working from home or hybrid working role and while we normally work core office hours unsociable hours working is also part of delivering our 24-hour service. The successful applicant will also expect to be rostered on-call 24x7 as part of the team.

Department Overview – Networks and Hosting
The IT Networks and Hosting team, within TP&O are responsible for managing and maintaining TfL’s core infrastructure at a virtual and physical layer.
Our infrastructure is hosted in two data centres where we lease colocation spaces. The environmental services for these locations are provided by our landlords allowing us to focus on the rack infrastructure.
The Team (Technical Facilities)
The Technical Facilities team is made up of approximately 6 specialists, working together across multiple workstreams including day to day operational activities, project delivery and lifecycle management.
About The Role
As a senior technical specialist, you will play a key role in maintaining and evolving our infrastructure platforms, leading major incident resolution, driving automation initiatives, supporting strategic projects, and providing expert guidance and mentorship across the organisation.
You will work independently, making informed technical decisions and/or recommendations that support operational excellence while contributing to the future direction of infrastructure services.
This is a critical technical lead role responsible for ensuring the health, performance, security, and resilience of enterprise infrastructure services across a complex and large-scale environment.

Key Duties
- Provide mentorship and coaching to a team of infrastructure engineers acting as a technical leader ensuring consistency and quality throughout the team.
- Lead the enterprise infrastructure technologies data centre environments.
- Monitor service health, availability, performance, and capacity to ensure operational excellence.
- Lead incident, service request, problem, root cause analysis and change activities in line with IT Service Management processes.
- Deliver proactive lifecycle management and continuous service improvement initiatives.
- Lead implementation and enhancement of infrastructure solutions and services.
- Provide technical leadership for infrastructure projects, upgrades, migrations, and service improvements from concept to delivery.
- Contribute to the design and assurance of complex infrastructure solutions and architecture.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute to infrastructure roadmaps and standards.
- Participates in root cause analysis and helps identify permanent solutions to recurring technical issues.
- Assess technical risks and provide recommendations on significant technology changes.
- Maintain service resilience, disaster recovery capabilities, and operational readiness.
- Work closely with customers, project managers, IT architects, product managers, vendors, service providers, and internal technology teams.
- Identify, design and develop automation processes, process improvement, operational efficiencies and service quality.
- Evaluate emerging technologies and contribute to infrastructure roadmaps and standards.
- Communicate complex technical concepts clearly to both technical and non-technical audiences.
Skills and Attributes
- Meticulous approach to work with a focus on quality and detail
- Ability to respond to High severity incidents and evidence the creation of detailed plans to restore service.
- Extensive experience of implementing cabling and cabling management systems, single & 3 phase power distribution systems, data centre operations and implementation in complex enterprise sized environments.
- Experience of leading within controlled environments using data centre management tools and service management tools.
- Practical experience of lifecycle management of systems.
- Experience of writing technical and functional requirements specifications
- Experience in data management and analytics including Sharepoint administration, Microsoft Power Platform including Power BI and high-level understanding of the underlying data constructs.
- Experience of designing and implementing no-code/low-code solutions to automate and improve data centre processes.
- Strong operational experience balancing service restoration priorities with technical excellence.
- Strong leadership, organisational and communication skills and ability to manage lone working within teams including setting & monitoring workloads
- Ability to influence, mentor, and lead IT Infrastructure Engineers and peers.
- Experienced in developing & maintaining health and safety plans and risk assessment, mitigation and reporting.
- Extensive experience of leading implementation, upgrading, migrating, maintaining and decommissioning data centre services and technical facilities in enterprise environments.
- Experience of business planning processes and budget forecasting
- Experience working with senior stakeholders and delivering business value through technology services and delivering customer-focused IT services.
Technical Knowledge and Skills
- Minimum, Cnet Data Centre Management Professional qualification or equivalent and 2 years’ experience working as an IT Senior Infrastructure Engineer, Lead Engineer, or Technical Architect in a Data Centre environment.
- Cisco CCNA or equivalent experience with network analysis
- ITIL: A strong understanding & knowledge of ITIL processes across an enterprise technology environment, particularly in relation to incidents, service requests, changes, problems.
- Full driving licence with own car, insured and able to drive to data centre locations.
- Sharepoint administration and content creation and management skills
- Using reporting systems like PowerBI to integrate with data centre management toolsets and provide management reports on data centre constraints by cabinet and cage.
- Designing and implementing no-code/low-code automation solutions to improve productivity or process efficiency
