Job summary

We have an exciting opportunity for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Database) to join our Infrastructure Engineering team. You'll play a key role in delivering, supporting, and evolving our database platforms, with a particular focus on Oracle and MongoDB technologies.

Working across cloud-based and modern database environments, including Oracle on AWS, MongoDB Atlas, PostgreSQL, and automation tools, you'll help ensure our services remain secure, resilient, and highly available. You'll be involved in database administration, performance optimisation, security, backup and recovery, monitoring, and supporting major technology and business change initiatives.

Please Note

  • Companies House cannot offer Visa sponsorship to candidates through this campaign.

  • You will be based at either our Cardiff or Edinburgh office where you will be expected to attend on a regular basis.
  • On-call duties form part of this role and will be undertaken on a rota basis once you are fully trained and have met competency expectations.

Job Description

We are looking for an experienced Senior Infrastructure Engineer to join the Database Support team. Working in an agile environment, this team supports Oracle and MongoDB database instances that underpin the core business functions of Companies House.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer (Database) you Will Be

  • Defining, building, bringing into service, operating, supporting, continually improving new and existing database technologies, to serve a variety of user needs.
  • Managing database configuration, maintaining system access and security, leading database upgrades and ensuring the latest patches are applied.
  • Managing service availability, by proactively monitoring capacity along with performance tuning using Oracle OEM to identify issues before they occur.
  • Managing incidents, requests, changes and problems, providing resolutions including root cause analysis.
  • Maximising the use of tools and technologies and driving continuous improvement to deliver operational excellence.

On-call Opportunities

Due to the nature of this role, there will occasionally be a requirement to work overtime during weekdays and weekends. You will also be expected to participate in an on-call rota, providing essential cover to ensure services remain operational 24 hours a day, 365 days a year, including Bank Holidays.

Participation in the on-call rota will only be required once you have demonstrated the necessary skills, knowledge, and competence to undertake on-call duties confidently.

Additional payments are available for both on-call duties and approved overtime, paid in addition to your annual salary.

Person specification

We're looking for the following skills and experience that will be assessed throughout the selection process.

The Successful Candidate Will Have

  • Strong experience administering and supporting Oracle Database 19c environments, including performance monitoring, backup and recovery, routine maintenance, upgrades, and operational troubleshooting.
  • Experience working with Oracle Active Data Guard, ensuring high availability, disaster recovery readiness, and replication monitoring.
  • Good working knowledge of AWS Cloud services, with experience supporting database and infrastructure workloads in cloud-based environments.
  • Familiarity with MongoDB Atlas, including deployment support, monitoring, and operational management activities.
  • Familiarity with configuration management and automation tools such as Ansible to support deployment and operational activities.
  • Experience managing database storage using Oracle ASM (Automatic Storage Management) and supporting enterprise database infrastructure.
  • Proficiency in Unix/Linux administration, particularly shell scripting for automation, monitoring, and operational support tasks.
  • Experience working with continuous integration and continuous delivery (CI/CD) pipelines, including tools such as Concourse or similar platforms.
