Job Summary

This is a fantastic opportunity to join DWP Engineering as a Senior Infrastructure Engineer and to create innovative digital solutions that make a difference to the lives of our 22 million users. We’re driving the adoption of Public Cloud services in line with Government Digital Service (GDS) and DWP’s own strategic hosting architectural principles.

The strategy for our engineers is to implement a ‘Digital by Default’ approach. We will do this by providing an end-to-end ‘multi-cloud’ hosted service for our Product Development Units. We’ll be providing a securely connected hosting service which removes DWP’s reliance on traditional hosting solutions and contracts.

To ensure our success, we are standardising, simplifying and automating, together with developing processes, training and tools to accelerate our delivery.

As a Senior Infrastructure Engineer, you will be capable of role modelling Infrastructure solutions which adhere to best practice, with a focus on operational stability, resilience, and availability.

This position will collaborate with Architects, Site Reliability Engineers, Delivery Managers, and Product Managers, who all support the implementation and operation of Cloud hosted products and services.

The role will sit within one of our Engineering Tooling Services Teams which comprise of Automation & Orchestration and Manage & Deploy My Code services. This role will maintain and support project to exit Ansible Automation Platform and GitLab from the On Premise Hosting (OPH) estate.

Job Description

  • Support the design and implementation of Public Cloud infrastructure services/solutions to meet strategic plans and roadmaps.
  • Responsible for operational management of Public Cloud hosted technologies, products, and services, with a focus on security, availability, resilience, and performance.
  • Provide specialist service/solution technical support and assistance to junior staff and users.
  • Development and implementation of service improvement plans to address identified issues for Public Cloud hosted technologies, products, and services.
  • Responsible for management and resolution of Incidents for Public Cloud hosted technologies, products, and services.
  • Working with Product Delivery Unit (PDU) teams to understand their current Ansible Automation Platform and GitLab instances.
  • Develop, execute and support the migration path for PDU instances to the strategic platforms.
  • Ensure minimal disruption to services by proactively identifying and resolving technical issues during and after migrations.
  • Supporting with the upskilling and developing of end users.
  • Identify, develop and implement automation solutions to reduce operational toil, improve system reliability, and enable teams to focus on higher value activities.

Salary Information

Pay for this role is from £57,946 to £73,205.

The maximum salary for the grade is £68,205, however a Digital Allowance of up to £5,000 per annum is available for exceptional candidates. Digital Allowance is non-salary, and non-pensionable, and is classed as a temporary allowance. It is reviewed annually where it could be retained, amended, or removed.

Our offer to successful candidates will be based on an assessment of your skills and experience as demonstrated at interview.

Existing Civil Servants who secure a new role on lateral transfer will maintain their current substantive salary.

Civil Servants who gain promotion will move to the bottom of the grade pay scale or receive a 10% increase applied to their current substantive salary, whichever is greater.

Hybrid Working

This role may be suitable for hybrid working, which is where an employee works part of the week in their DWP office and part of the week from home. This is a voluntary, non-contractual arrangement and your office will be your contractual place of work.

Selection process details

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Experience and Technical skills.

Stage 1: Application

Your Application Will Consist Of Four Parts

  • A Personal Details application form.
  • Employment history - this should contain your work experience and any skills, qualifications and accomplishments relevant to the jobs you have completed.
  • Personal statement - up to 1000 words. This statement should be used to provide examples of how you meet the essential criteria below:
    • Significant experience of using and administering source code management systems such as GitLab, including the development, maintenance and optimisation of CI/CD pipelines.
    • Significant experience of developing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform and Configuration as Code (CaC) using Ansible. Experience of CloudFormation is desirable.
    • Significant experience of administering and supporting Linux operating systems, including RHEL and Debian, within enterprise scale environments.
    • Significant experience of working within Service and Delivery Management frameworks, including ITIL practices such as Incident, Problem and Change Management, alongside Agile delivery methodologies.
    • Significant experience of leading, coaching and developing engineers and technical teams, providing technical direction, building capability, and driving the adoption of engineering standards and best practices to deliver high quality outcomes.
  • Technical statement (up to 250 words). The following statement is aligned to the required technical skill of Technical Breadth. This statement should be used to provide example(s) of how you meet the criterion below:
    • Experience enabling engineering teams to adopt and apply standards, policies and technical frameworks that promote consistency, compliance and engineering excellence across multiple disciplines.

Stage 2: Interview

If you’re successful at the sift stage, you’ll be invited to a video interview via Microsoft Teams. During the interview, you’ll be assessed against the experience criteria listed under both the essential criteria and technical skill.

You Will Be Asked To Do a 5-minute Presentation To Further Assess Your Experience. Your Presentation Should Focus On The Following

  • Give a brief presentation on how you would deploy a scalable application in the cloud to multiple environments consistently and securely.

Your Presentation Should Consider Aspects Such As

  • Minimising manual steps in deployments
  • How secrets can be handled securely
  • Ensuring least privilege access both at a management level and a user level
  • How you can ensure regular releases of your application with consistency between all environments and minimal down time
  • Steps to ensure roll back to previous good state is straight forward
  • Prevent public access to your application front end
