JOB TITLE: Senior Infrastructure Specialist - zDatabase IMS Sysprog

SALARY: £72,702 - £80,780
LOCATION(S): Manchester or Edinburgh
HOURS: Full-time - 35 hours per week
WORKING PATTERN: Our work style is hybrid, which involves spending at least two days per week, or 40% of our time, at our Manchester or Edinburgh office sites. About this opportunity

As a Senior Infrastructure Specialist, you'll be responsible for the development, implementation, support, and continuous improvement of IMS and Datacom services across our zMainframe estate.

Working within the Core Infrastructure z Mainframe team, you'll provide deep technical expertise, ensuring the reliability, performance, and security of critical database and transaction processing environments. You'll also support strategic programmes, infrastructure change initiatives, and operational excellence activities while helping to develop the strategic direction of our mainframe platforms.

This position provides the chance to contribute within a cooperative, expert group setting where exchanging knowledge, creativity, and ongoing development are strongly supported.

What you'll be doing

  • Delivering technical direction and expert insight for IMS and Datacom technologies within the zMainframe environment.
  • Crafting, implementing, maintaining, and improving infrastructure services in line with Group standards, policies, and architectural principles.
  • Ensuring systems remain secure, available, resilient, and performant, meeting agreed service levels and operational objectives.
  • Supporting infrastructure projects, platform upgrades, and technology refresh activities from planning through to implementation.
  • Investigating and resolving complex incidents and problems, identifying root causes, and implementing long-term solutions.
  • Participating in an on-call rota and providing out-of-hours support when required.
  • Collaborating with infrastructure, engineering, architecture, and application teams to deliver reliable and scalable services.
  • Finding opportunities for automation, optimisation, and continuous improvement across the platform estate.
  • Contributing to technical documentation, standards, knowledge sharing, and mentoring activities.

What we're looking for?

  • Extensive background as an IMS Systems Programmer in a z/OS Mainframe setting.
  • Demonstrated experience in installing, configuring, supporting, and maintaining IMS and Datacom products.
  • Experience supporting large-scale, business-critical production environments.
  • Strong diagnostic and problem-solving skills with experience managing complex technical incidents.
  • Knowledge of mainframe operational practices, change management, and service management processes.
  • Experience working within highly regulated or enterprise-scale environments.
  • Effective communication and collaborator management skills, with the ability to collaborate across technical and non-technical teams.
  • A proactive approach and passion for delivering resilient, high-quality infrastructure services.

  • Datacom Admin experience for z/OS
  • Knowledge of automation, scripting, or infrastructure optimisation techniques.
  • Experience supporting modernisation initiatives involving mainframe platforms.
  • Understanding of broader z/OS infrastructure components and associated technologies.
