Job Description
The role of a Senior Intellectual Property Valuation Specialist involves providing specialist valuation expertise when working with other stakeholders across HMRC on the most high profile cases, as well as negotiating effectively with customers and their appointed valuation experts. Your role is within the Intangibles and Intellectual Property Team, specialising in the valuation of goodwill, software, licenses and intellectual property such as trademarks, patents and technical know-how.
Most valuations you take responsibility of will involve multi-national enterprises and require the need to consider international tax issues such as transfer pricing and fair value accounting.
You will provide leadership on valuation matters, leading on the largest and most complex referrals, including those within the High Risk Corporate Programme. Using strong stakeholder management and influencing skills you will engage with senior internal and external stakeholders, providing challenge where appropriate, and take a key role in identifying, managing and communicating valuation risks to senior leaders and governance forums including Tax Assurance Commissioners.
You will engage confidently with customers on complex valuation and tax technical matters, communicating effectively both verbally and in writing. You will use your expert valuation knowledge alongside your negotiation skills to influence outcomes, resolve disputes and support the delivery of HMRC's objectives.
You will represent HMRC at International forums, discussing valuation principles with other tax authorities.
You will play a key role in supporting and developing other valuers, which may include attending both internal and external meetings. You will assist in building valuation capability and expertise across the wider team.
The role of a Senior Intellectual Property Valuation Specialist in business valuation is encompassed within the Royal Institution of Chartered Surveyors (RICS). If not already, as part of the role we will support you in becoming a member and completing the RICS Assessment of Professional Competence for the Business Valuation Faculty leading to full RICS membership.

- Taking ownership on the valuation of a number of high value, complex and sensitive valuations.
- Working with HMRC’s Customer Compliance Group, particularly Large Business and Mid-sized Business and collaborating with HMRC’s Technical teams including Accountancy and Transfer Pricing where valuation issues arise.
- Developing a deep understanding of the evolving valuation principles involved in this area of work whilst collaborating with other Intellectual Property Valuation Specialists by sharing technical knowledge and providing coaching.
- Be integral in upskilling the team, providing technical support where appropriate while acting as a strong role model.
- Represent HMRC at international forums with other tax authorities.
Essential Criteria
- Excellent stakeholder engagement, communication and influencing skills.
- Excellent evidence-based decision-making skills and confidence in owning and communicating those decisions.
- Substantial experience and understanding of intellectual property within a complex valuation or international tax environment.

Qualifications
- RICS (Associate (AssocRICS) or Member (MRICS))
- Advanced Diploma in International Taxation (ADIT) or Chartered Tax Adviser (CTA)
- Successfully completed the HMRC Tax Specialist Programme or one of its predecessors (TPDP, IDP, ITS2, CPT, FT2) or
- Be able to demonstrate significant experience of intellectual property within a complex valuation or international tax environment.

Selection process details
How to Apply
As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide the following:
