Job Summary

We are recruiting for a Senior Interaction Designer to join our Digital Change team.

The team supports and oversees the design, development, and continuous improvement of Ofsted's digital services and technology infrastructure. We work closely with Customer Technology, Colleague Technology, and colleagues across Ofsted to deliver effective, reliable, and user-focused digital solutions.

We help projects adopt User-Centred Design (UCD) principles and design-led development approaches, ensuring that the services we buy, build, and improve meet user needs. The team provides expertise in User Research, Content Design, Interaction Design, and Architecture, bringing together specialists in Technical, Information, and Enterprise Architecture.

As a Senior Interaction Designer, you will play a key role in shaping and improving Ofsted's web-based digital services. You will help redesign and enhance our digital services, websites, and systems, working closely with multidisciplinary teams, contractors, and suppliers to create user-focused, accessible, and effective solutions.

Technical Skills

We'll assess you against these technical skills during the selection process:

  • Interaction design practice, including designing accessible, user-centred interactive products or services through sketching, concept creation, prototyping, journey mapping and needs analysis.
  • Inclusive design and accessibility, with a strong understanding of designing services that meet a wide range of access needs and of the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG).
  • Evidence-based and iterative design, including working with user researchers and using research, metrics and feedback to shape, test and improve design decisions.
  • Prototyping and technical understanding, including using Figma, HTML and CSS to create prototypes, and understand how web technologies affect design decisions, usability and accessibility.
  • Senior interaction design judgement, including reviewing work and giving constructive feedback, and helping to improve the quality and consistency of interaction design across teams. Experience coaching and supporting other designers desirable.
  • Communicating and influencing through interaction design by clearly explaining decisions, constructively challenging assumptions, managing difficult conversations, and leading collaborative activities focused on user needs.

This vacancy is using Success Profiles, and will assess your Experience and Technical skills.

As part of the application process, you will be asked to provide the following:

Interview

Interviews will be held during the week commencing 2 November 2026 remotely via Microsoft Teams. During the interview, we will look for:

  • Your comments on the design or set of designs and your next steps if given the task to redesign the screen(s).
  • Point out accessibility issues and what advice you’d offer to the design team.
  • Demonstrate your experience and technical skills relevant to the role, explaining your use of technology and general approach and principles.
  • Demonstrate a knowledge of GDS / Gov.uk patterns & standards.
