About the Role

JetBrains—a global software company creating intelligent tools for software developers and teams—is seeking a senior, commercially minded Intellectual Property (IP) and Data Protection Lawyer to join its in-house Legal team.

In this role, you’ll:

  • Shape and support JetBrains’ intellectual property and data protection strategy across multiple jurisdictions.
  • Combine deep expertise in intlectual property law, privacy, data protection compliance, technology transactions, and regulatory risk management.
  • Primarily support the Platform Project Office and its technology-driven products, strategic growth projects, and startup initiatives, with a focus on IP structuring, data protection compliance, commercialization, and product lifecycle management.

The ideal candidate will serve as a strategic legal advisor, partnering with executive and functional leadership to:

  • Protect intellectual assets globally.
  • Ensure compliance with global privacy laws.
  • Support innovation and growth initiatives.

Key Responsibilities

Intellectual Property (IP) Leadership

  • Advise on all aspects of intellectual property law, including:
    • Copyrights
    • Trademarks
    • Patents
    • Trade secrets
    • Domain names
    • Licensing
    • Brand protection
  • Develop and maintain the group’s global IP strategy aligned with business objectives.
  • Guide product development, commercialization, scaling of new business directions, partnerships, and operational expansions.
  • Draft, review, and negotiate IP-related agreements, including:
    • Licensing agreements
    • SaaS and software agreements
    • Technology transfer agreements
    • NDAs and confidentiality agreements
    • Development and collaboration agreements
    • Open-source software policies and compliance documentation
  • Provide ownership and protection guidance for company-created intellectual property.
  • Monitor and advise on infringement risks, enforcement, disputes, and litigation.
  • Conduct IP due diligence for acquisitions, investments, and commercial transactions.
  • Advise on IP risks in AI tools, open-source software, and emerging technologies.

Data Protection & Privacy Compliance

  • Lead JetBrains’ privacy and data protection compliance program.
  • Advise on compliance with key privacy laws, including:
    • GDPR and UK GDPR
    • ePrivacy requirements
    • CCPA/CPRA
    • Global data transfer requirements
    • Other relevant privacy/regulatory frameworks
  • Draft, maintain, and review:
    • Privacy policies & notices
    • Consent mechanisms
    • Internal governance documentation
    • Data Processing Agreements (DPAs)
    • Standard Contractual Clauses (SCCs)
    • Vendor privacy assessments
  • Conduct and advise on:
    • Data Protection Impact Assessments (DPIAs)
    • Legitimate interest assessments
    • Data mapping exercises
    • Records of Processing Activities
  • Support privacy-by-design principles for products, systems, and commercial initiatives.
  • Monitor regulatory developments and provide actionable guidance.
  • Assist with audits, regulatory inquiries, investigations, and compliance reporting.

Commercial & Operational Support

  • Provide practical, risk-based legal advice to internal stakeholders.
  • Partner with external counsel and regulatory authorities as needed.
  • Support legal operations, policy development, and governance initiatives.
  • Collaborate on scalable legal frameworks for international expansion, including:
    • Early-stage and scaling technology initiatives
    • IP rights structuring
    • Technology transfers
    • Data governance frameworks
    • Regulatory risk assessments

Requirements

Essential Criteria

  • Qualifications as a solicitor in England and Wales, or an equivalent European jurisdiction.
  • 8–12 years’ post-qualification experience (PQE) in:
    • IP, technology, and data protection law, gained in-house or at a leading tech/IP practice.
  • Strong experience advising software, SaaS, or digital product businesses.
  • Proficiency in UK and EU IP law and GDPR frameworks.
  • Proven ability to negotiate complex commercial tech agreements.
  • Experience managing cross-border legal and regulatory matters.
  • Strong drafting, negotiation, stakeholder management, and analytical skills.
  • Ability to balance legal risk with commercial objectives.
  • Outstanding project management and organizational abilities.
  • Excellent written and verbal communication in English.

Preferred Experience

  • Hands-on experience with AI, cloud computing, open-source software, or platform businesses.
  • Familiarity with AI governance and emerging tech regulations, such as:
    • EU AI Act
    • Data Act
    • Digital Services Act
    • NIS2 Directive
  • Experience acting as or supporting a Data Protection Officer (DPO).
  • Direct exposure to technology startups, venture initiatives, or innovation-focused business units, particularly in:
    • IP strategy
    • Commercialization
    • Privacy/data governance
  • Additional language skills.
