Job Description
This is an exciting opportunity to lead the delivery and continuous improvement of critical IT services during a period of significant transformation.
You'll play a key role in managing supplier transitions, driving service performance and ensuring our services continue to meet the needs of both internal and external customers.
HMRC operates the largest digital estate in Government, supporting millions of customers and enabling the delivery of vital public services. As we modernise our technology landscape and transform how services are delivered, you'll help shape the future of IT service management within one of the UK's most complex digital environments.
Joining a diverse and collaborative team, you'll work with senior stakeholders, suppliers and technical specialists to deliver resilient, customer-focused services that support HMRC's vision for a modern digital tax administration.
Responsibilities
- Take ownership of the performance and health of assigned IT services, using service data, customer feedback and operational insight to identify risks, resolve weaknesses and improve service outcomes.
- Lead the response to major incidents and complex service problems, bringing together technical teams, suppliers and stakeholders to restore service quickly, address underlying causes and reduce the likelihood of recurrence.
- Build effective, trusted relationships across organisational and supplier boundaries, using strong communication, collaboration and influencing skills to maintain shared ownership of service performance and priorities.
- Provide constructive challenge and sound judgement during service and technology change, ensuring operational risks, customer impacts, support requirements and service readiness are understood before changes are introduced.
- Maintain a clear understanding of the service landscape, including assets, costs, dependencies, risks and planned change, ensuring information is accurate and supports informed decisions about service performance and investment.
- Champion continuous improvement, translating analysis of live-service performance into practical improvements that strengthen resilience, efficiency and the experience of internal and external customers.
- Work confidently and autonomously in a complex environment, balancing competing service, supplier and stakeholder priorities while escalating significant risks and decisions appropriately.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
