Role: Senior Java Backend Engineer
Location: London, UK (Hybrid)
Hiring Type: Contract Role
About the Role
Strong Banking and Payments domain knowledge with proven experience delivering solutions within complex, enterprise-scale payment platforms.
Key Requirements
- Extensive hands-on experience with Java 8+, Spring Boot, Hibernate/JPA, and microservices-based architectures.
- Proven experience designing, developing, securing, and supporting RESTful APIs and working with API Gateway technologies such as Apigee.
- Strong experience building event-driven architectures using Kafka and asynchronous messaging patterns.
- Proven experience developing, deploying, and supporting containerised applications using Docker, Kubernetes, Google Kubernetes Engine (GKE), Helm, and Istio Service Mesh.
- Mandatory experience delivering cloud-native solutions on Google Cloud Platform (GCP), including application development, deployment, networking, security, observability, and operational support.
- Strong experience implementing Infrastructure as Code (IaC) using Terraform.
- Strong understanding of secure, resilient, scalable, and highly available application design principles.
- Proven experience with modern software engineering practices including CI/CD, DevSecOps, automated deployment pipelines, and engineering excellence frameworks.
- Hands-on experience with Git, GitHub, Maven, Jenkins, Nexus, SonarQube, and modern CI/CD tooling.
- Strong experience with SQL and NoSQL databases, data modelling, and database optimisation, together with strong Unix/Linux skills.
- Proven ability to perform Quality Engineering activities within a Platform 3.0 engineering model, including test automation, unit and component testing, quality assurance, production validation, test data management, shift-left testing, TDD, continuous testing, and automated quality gates.
- Ability to take ownership of code quality, testing, observability, operational readiness, and production support, working closely with Quality Engineers and SRE teams.
- Experience using GitHub Copilot and other AI-assisted development tools, with practical prompt engineering skills to improve developer productivity and code quality.
- Experience with observability, monitoring, and performance analysis platforms such as Dynatrace.
- Proven ability to troubleshoot complex production issues, perform root cause analysis, and support highly available distributed systems.
- Experience delivering solutions within large-scale enterprise environments with strong governance, security, resilience, and operational requirements.
