Senior Java Backend Engineer
Location: Burgess Hill, UK
Work Arrangement: Hybrid – 3 days onsite per week
Job Type: Permanent
Role Overview
We are looking for a Senior Java Backend Engineer to design, develop, maintain, and optimize robust server-side applications. The ideal candidate will have strong software engineering fundamentals, experience working with legacy systems, and a passion for writing clean, scalable, and maintainable code.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, refactor, and maintain server-side applications.
- Write clean, efficient, and testable code.
- Develop and maintain unit tests and troubleshoot production issues.
- Analyze and optimize application performance.
- Work with asynchronous programming and backend services.
- Contribute to Continuous Integration (CI) and build processes.
- Modernize and maintain legacy codebases.
- Integrate with bespoke backend services and APIs.
- Design effective solutions for complex and open-ended problems.
- Collaborate effectively within a cross-functional engineering team.
- Contribute to open-source initiatives where applicable.

Required Skills & Experience
- Strong experience in Java backend development and server-side application engineering.
- Solid understanding of software development, testing, refactoring, and debugging.
- Experience with REST APIs and/or GraphQL (GQL).
- Experience with Gradle or similar build tools.
- Good understanding of CI/CD practices.
- Experience working with legacy systems and complex backend environments.
- Strong problem-solving and performance optimization skills.
- Self-motivated with the ability to work independently and collaboratively.
- Bachelor’s degree in Computer Science, Engineering, or a related field, or equivalent practical experience.
