Senior Java Developer
Industry: Investment Banking
Location: Glasgow
Contract: 12 Months

The Role
We are seeking a Senior Java Developer to join our client, a major US Investment Bank, working in their Java Platform Engineering team in Glasgow on an initial 12-month contract.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the development of reusable Java frameworks, libraries, and platform services used across a large-scale technology environment. You will help drive Java modernisation, improve developer productivity, and shape technical standards across the organisation.
The role is suited to an experienced Java developer with strong knowledge of distributed systems, concurrency, and Spring Boot, who enjoys working on complex technical challenges and platform engineering.
What You'll Do
- Define technical standards and best practices for Java-based distributed systems.
- Design, develop, and support reusable Java libraries, frameworks, and platform services.
- Contribute to Java modernisation and platform engineering initiatives.
- Work with application teams to improve platform guidance and developer enablement.
- Lead technical investigations, proof-of-concepts, and technology evaluations.
- Develop technical documentation, reference architectures, and engineering standards.
- Support performance, resilience, and scalability improvements across Java applications.
- Explore agentic coding tools to support prototyping, testing, documentation, and developer productivity.

Key Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial experience with Java development and JVM internals.
- Excellent understanding of concurrent and multithreaded programming.
- Strong knowledge of distributed systems and microservice architectures.
- Extensive experience with Spring and Spring Boot.
- Strong Linux and troubleshooting skills.
- Experience developing reusable libraries, frameworks, or platform services.
- Understanding of software architecture, scalability, and resilience.
- Excellent communication skills, with the ability to work across technical teams.
- Experience contributing to technical standards, modernisation, or platform engineering initiatives.
Desirable Skills
- Kubernetes and container platforms.
- Cloud-native application architectures.
- Performance engineering and JVM tuning.
- API gateways and service mesh technologies.
- OpenAPI, gRPC, or event-driven architectures.
- Experience with C++, Python, or other platform languages.
- CI/CD and developer tooling.
- Experience contributing to open-source software.
