Role Overview
As a Senior Java Developer in the Crossing Technology team, your primary responsibility is to develop, maintain, and optimize Instinet’s Crossing Systems, including the Instinet BlockMatch MTF and CBX crossing applications. You’ll also contribute to defining the technical direction of Instinet’s common Core trading systems.

- Work with business stakeholders to elicit and analyse requirements for new/existing crossing applications.
- Collaborate with senior architects to design scalable, high-performance software for business-critical trading systems.
- Implement performance and latency improvements using best practices in software performance engineering.
- Oversee the entire software lifecycle of projects, from design to production deployment.
- Ensure compliance with Nomura software standards while delivering high-quality software to QA and UAT teams.
- Integrate changes smoothly with deployment and Change Management functions in production.
- Conduct peer reviews of colleagues’ work to strengthen overall software quality.
- Provide 2nd-level support for trading system software (primarily covering UK/US market hours, with best-efforts coverage outside these times and occasional weekend/holiday on-call).
- Generate technical documentation and step-by-step guides to support cross-team training.
- Mentor junior team members, offering technical guidance and career development support.
Required Skills, Experience & Qualifications
- Working knowledge of equities trading systems, particularly in crossing/matching engines.
- Proficient in FIX protocol trading workflows, including perspectives from venues/exchanges.
- Extensive experience developing high-volume, low-latency Java trading systems, with expertise in:
- Performance profiling, monitoring, and tuning.
- Software performance engineering methodologies.
- Experience with source control systems (e.g., SVN, GIT).
- Background supporting fast-paced environments with mission-critical systems.
- Knowledge of designs and methodologies, such as Agile/Scrum, Microservices, distributed systems, and messaging frameworks.
- Strong proficiency in Java, with complementary skills in Perl or Python.
- Solid understanding of SQL, Linux, and networking fundamentals.
