Senior Java Developer – Structured Rates (Hybrid)
Location: Global – View available locations
Morgan Stanley's Technology Division is seeking a Senior Java Developer to join our Structured Rates desk-facing squad. You’ll collaboratively develop and support technology solutions that empower traders to execute highly detailed structured rates activities, including trading, risk management, and valuation systems.
This is a Software Engineering position at Vice President level, part of our team responsible for delivering cutting-edge software solutions that drive business innovation in a leading global investment bank.

About the Role
We’ve refined financial markets for generations—now we’re evolving them. As a Senior Java Developer, you’ll work within the Structured Rates technology organization, partnering with teams across trading, risk management, and infrastructure to build, enhance, and maintain systems that durable and scalable distributed systems that drive profitability and risk management for our clients.
Key Responsibilities
Software Development & System Lifecycle
- Partner with product leads and architects to design and deliver enhanced platforms and future-technology solutions for structured rates.
- Design, build, and maintain lightweight, secure, and resilient systems spanning valuation, risk computations, and model-driven pricing engines.
- Promote continuous improvement by evaluating business and technical requirements, analysing current systems, and proposing data-driven optimisations.
- Play a key role in the full software development lifecycle (SDLC), from requirements gathering to deployment and operations.
Quality & Performance
- Ensure code quality through unit testing, integration testing, and regression verification.
- Maintain a strong focus on continuous integration and deployment (CI/CD) practices for fast iteration and minimal downtime.
- Drive adoption of automated testing and monitoring frameworks to enhance system stability.
Collaboration & Knowledge Sharing
- Work closely with global multidisciplinary teams, including traders, quants, analysts, backend engineers, and infrastructure teams, to deliver scalable, efficient solutions.
- Collaborate with interest rate derivatives specialists and middleware/infrastructure teams to optimise system performance.
- Support production releases and provide post-deployment maintenance in a fast-paced, mission-critical environment.

Cutting-Edge Technology Exposure
- Develop distributed systems leveraging distributed caching and grid computing technologies (e.g., Coherence, Infinispan, Hazelcast).
- Engage with modern financial risk systems, including distributed valuation pipelines, risk aggregation frameworks, and real-time reporting.
- Contribute to scalable pricing engines and risk calculation models that power structured products in capital markets.
What You’ll Bring to the Team
Experience & Skills
- 6+ years of relevant experience in software engineering, with a strong background in Java development.
- In-depth knowledge of design patterns, data structures, and scalable application development.
- Proficiency in Java 8+, with hands-on experience with:
- Core APIs
- Multithreaded programming and concurrency models
- Performance tuning of high-volatile linked markets
- Children in large-scale distributed systems using technologies such as:
- Distributed caches (Coherence, Infinispan, Hazelcast)
- Grid computing (or similar distributed frameworks)
- NoSQL databases (e.g., Cassandra) or stream processing
- Familiarity with Scalable and/or willingness to upskill in Scala-based technologies.
- Experience with financial services middleware (e.g. Symphony, Akka, Hazelcast) a plus.
- Exposure to risk system development, including:
- Valuation, risk-based pricing models
- Exposure simulation, limit calculations, and derivatives valuation
- Hands-on experience with pricing engines, model libraries, or quantitative financial models.
Technical Fit
- CI/CD proficiency: Strong familiarity with Jenkins, Maven, Git, and advanced build & test automation.
- Testing mindset: Unit testing frameworks (JUnit), mocking (Mockito), assertions, and manual regression verification.
- DevOps awareness: Interest in infrastructure-as-code, container technologies, and slack/sociability tools used in system resilience planning.
Soft Skills
- Strong communication and collaboration skills, especially in global cross-functional teams.
