We are looking for an experienced Senior Java Developer located within commuting distance of Cardiff. The role offers excellent flexibility, with office attendance required no more than one day per week.
What that means day to day
- Play a key role within the development team, contributing to the design, development, and maintenance of business-critical applications, services, and platforms.
- Support the continuous improvement of team practices, processes, and ways of working to enhance efficiency, quality, and delivery outcomes.
- Collaborate with colleagues across Technology and the wider business to identify opportunities to improve existing systems, streamline processes, and deliver new capabilities.
- Work closely with stakeholders to gather, analyse, and document business requirements, translating them into clear user stories and technical solutions.
- Design, develop, test, and maintain high-quality code for web, mobile, and desktop applications, following established engineering standards and Agile development practices.
- Investigate, troubleshoot, and resolve production issues, providing support for critical incidents and service escalations.
- Contribute to architectural discussions and technical decision-making, helping to shape scalable, secure, and maintainable solutions.
- Participate in design reviews and peer code reviews, promoting best practices and maintaining high standards of software quality.
- Support the planning and execution of application releases, deployments, and platform enhancements.
- Work closely with quality assurance teams to ensure solutions meet functional, performance, security, and reliability standards.
- Provide third-line technical support, acting as a subject matter expert for complex application and platform issues.
- Mentor and support other developers, sharing knowledge and encouraging technical excellence across the team.
- Demonstrate flexibility in learning and working with new technologies, programming languages, frameworks, and platforms as required.
- Stay current with emerging technologies, industry trends, and development practices, recommending improvements where appropriate.
- Take ownership of technical deliverables, ensuring work is completed to a high standard and aligned with business objectives.

What you’ll need to be successful
Essential
- Strong commercial experience developing enterprise applications using Java 17+/21.
- Strong experience with Spring Boot, and related ecosystem frameworks.
- Proven experience designing and developing RESTful APIs and microservices-based architectures.
- Strong understanding of distributed systems, event-driven architectures, and asynchronous processing patterns.
- Experience working with relational databases such as PostgreSQL, MySQL, or SQL Server, including query optimisation and data modelling.
- Good understanding of modern software architecture principles, including microservices, domain-driven design (DDD), CQRS, and API-first development.
- Experience with cloud-native development and deployment, ideally within AWS, including services such as ECS, Lambda, API Gateway, ECR, S3, RDS, and CloudWatch.
- Hands-on experience with containerisation technologies such as Docker and orchestration/deployment pipelines.
- Strong knowledge of automated testing practices, including unit, integration, and end-to-end testing using tools such as JUnit, Mockito, and Testcontainers.
- Experience using source control and collaborative development workflows with Git and GitHub.
- Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and modern software delivery practices.
- Ability to investigate and resolve complex production issues, including performance tuning and root cause analysis.
- AI literate, with practical experience using tools such as GitHub Copilot, Claude, or similar AI-assisted development tools to improve productivity and code quality.
- Strong problem-solving skills with the ability to work independently and take ownership of technical solutions.
- Experience working effectively within Agile/Scrum delivery teams.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder engagement, and collaboration skills.
- A commitment to continuous improvement, engineering excellence, and ongoing professional development.
Desirable
- Experience developing modern front-end applications using React and TypeScript.
- Experience with event streaming and messaging technologies such as Kafka
- Knowledge of infrastructure-as-code technologies such as Terraform or AWS CDK.
- Experience working in highly regulated, compliance-driven, or security-focused environments.
- Experience mentoring developers and leading technical initiatives.
- Experience contributing to architecture decisions and engineering standards across multiple teams.
- Exposure to mobile application development frameworks.
