Senior Java Developer - interim 12 months
Manchester, Birmingham or Leeds
About the Role
We're recruiting for an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a Central Government department, playing a leading role in shaping the quality, stability and craftsmanship of the software that powers citizen-facing services.
As a Senior Java Developer, you'll be a skilled practitioner and a role model in software craftsmanship, responsible for ensuring best practices are adhered to across the department and guiding teams on how to deliver quality software products. You'll assist in the design of software products that make up citizen services, working in close collaboration with Architecture and Engineering colleagues, with a strong focus on operational stability, robustness, resilience, availability and quality.
Key Responsibilities
- Design and lead strategies for building reusable libraries and services
- Own the development of medium-to-long-term strategies for product lines and the wider Software Engineering Community
- Identify and support the resolution of infrastructure faults
- Provide 3rd line support on products developed, including out-of-hours support as required
- Lead multiple Software Engineering teams, providing technical leadership, guidance, coaching and mentoring for professional development
- Contribute to and help set strategic direction for the product team and wider Software Engineering community
- Lead collaboration and knowledge-sharing of good practice across the software engineering community
- Lead and support community discussions on best practice within Software Engineering
- Review the system designs of others to ensure the right technology choices, efficient use of resources and effective integration across systems
- Define and design integration builds, coordinating and supporting integration testing activities

What We're Looking For
- Proven experience designing, coding, testing and documenting programs or scripts of medium-to-high complexity, to agreed standards
- Strong understanding of user needs, with experience integrating digital analytics and qualitative research (e.g. user surveys) to shape product decisions
- Confident using and guiding others in a modern standards-based engineering approach
- Experience designing systems with medium levels of risk, impact and technical complexity
- Strong stakeholder engagement skills, with the ability to represent user needs internally and influence senior leadership
- A collaborative, coaching mindset, with a track record of mentoring engineers and fostering a culture where people feel safe to challenge and contribute ideas
- Awareness of the wider public sector context, able to consider the impact of technology and change on policy, service delivery and diverse end users, including accessibility needs
