Job Summary:

We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a technology team supporting a Client in London. The successful candidate will be responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining high-quality, scalable software solutions within a regulated financial-services environment. This role requires strong hands-on expertise in Java development, distributed systems, software architecture, and modern engineering practices. The ideal candidate will have experience working in complex enterprise environments and collaborating effectively with business stakeholders, architects, developers, testers, and support teams.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Design, develop, test, and maintain robust Java applications and services.
  • Contribute to the full software development lifecycle, from requirements analysis through deployment and production support.
  • Develop scalable, high-performance, and secure applications using Java and related technologies.
  • Design and implement RESTful APIs and microservices.
  • Participate in technical design and architectural discussions.
  • Perform code reviews and promote clean code, reusable components, and engineering best practices.
  • Troubleshoot complex technical issues and provide effective production support.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams, including business analysts, QA engineers, DevOps engineers, and infrastructure teams.
  • Develop unit, integration, and automated tests to ensure application quality.
  • Support continuous integration and continuous delivery processes.
  • Contribute to application modernization, cloud adoption, and platform migration initiatives where applicable.
  • Prepare technical documentation and maintain appropriate development and operational records.
  • Ensure solutions comply with enterprise security, risk, audit, and regulatory requirements.
  • Mentor junior and mid-level developers and provide technical guidance to the wider team.

Required Skills and Experience:

  • 10+ years of professional software development experience, with significant hands-on experience in Java.
  • Strong expertise in Java 8 or later, including object-oriented programming, collections, concurrency, exception handling, and JVM fundamentals.
  • Experience with Spring Framework, particularly Spring Boot, Spring MVC, Spring Data, and Spring Security.
  • Strong knowledge of microservices architecture and distributed systems.
  • Experience designing and developing RESTful web services and APIs.
  • Solid understanding of SQL and relational databases such as Oracle, PostgreSQL, or SQL Server.
  • Experience with messaging technologies such as Kafka, RabbitMQ, IBM MQ, or similar.
  • Good knowledge of software design patterns, data structures, algorithms, and system design.
  • Experience with automated testing frameworks such as JUnit, Mockito, or Cucumber.
  • Experience using Git and modern build tools such as Maven or Gradle.
  • Familiarity with CI/CD tools and practices, such as Jenkins, GitLab CI, Azure DevOps, or similar.
  • Experience working in Agile delivery environments, including Scrum or Kanban.
  • Strong understanding of secure coding principles, SDLC controls, and production-quality engineering.
  • Excellent analytical, problem-solving, communication, and collaboration skills.

Desirable Skills:

  • Previous experience in investment banking, capital markets, wealth management, or another regulated financial-services environment.
  • Experience with trading, risk management, reference data, market data, payments, or post-trade systems.
  • Knowledge of cloud platforms such as AWS, Microsoft Azure, or Google Cloud.
  • Experience with Docker, Kubernetes, OpenShift, or containerized deployments.
  • Familiarity with observability and monitoring tools such as Splunk, Grafana, Prometheus, or Dynatrace.
  • Experience with performance tuning, profiling, and high-volume transaction processing.
  • Knowledge of event-driven architecture and domain-driven design.
  • Experience working with low-latency or highly available systems.
  • Familiarity with infrastructure-as-code tools such as Terraform or Ansible.
