Due to the secure nature of the programme, you will need to hold UK Security Clearance or be eligible to go through this clearance. This is a hybrid position but will require working on client site in Swansea 3 days per week.
Your future duties and responsibilities
In this role, you will take ownership of designing, developing and delivering high-quality Java applications that support the modernisation of critical public services. Working with Java, Spring Boot and AWS, you’ll build secure, scalable cloud-native solutions that deliver meaningful outcomes for our clients. You’ll have the freedom to explore innovative approaches, solve complex technical challenges and influence engineering decisions while ensuring solutions meet demanding security, performance and regulatory requirements.
As a senior member of an Agile engineering team, you’ll collaborate with architects, product owners, business analysts and DevOps specialists to deliver reliable, maintainable software. You’ll also help develop the capabilities of others through mentoring, knowledge sharing and technical guidance, supported by a culture that encourages continuous learning and professional growth.

Key responsibilities:
- Design & Develop: Build, test and maintain enterprise-grade applications using Java, Spring Boot and microservices architectures.
- Innovate & Deliver: Develop secure, scalable cloud-native solutions using AWS technologies and engineering best practices.
- Optimise & Enhance: Design and improve data solutions using PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and other database technologies.
- Collaborate & Influence: Work across multidisciplinary Agile teams to translate business requirements into effective technical solutions.
- Lead & Mentor: Conduct code reviews, provide technical guidance and support the development of junior engineers.
- Automate & Improve: Contribute to CI/CD practices, automated testing and continuous improvement of software delivery.
- Secure & Assure: Ensure applications meet public sector security, governance, compliance and quality standards.
- Plan & Deliver: Participate in Agile ceremonies, contributing to sprint planning, prioritisation and successful delivery outcomes.
Required Qualifications To Be Successful In This Role
To succeed in this role, you should be an experienced Java engineer with a strong background in building cloud-native applications and delivering high-quality software within complex environments. You'll combine hands-on technical expertise with excellent problem-solving and collaboration skills, demonstrating the confidence to take ownership of engineering challenges, contribute new ideas and support colleagues in delivering successful outcomes.
Essential skills and experience:
- Java & Spring Boot: Extensive hands-on experience developing enterprise applications using Java and Spring Boot.
- AWS Cloud: Strong practical experience designing, developing and deploying cloud-native applications using AWS services.
- Database Technologies: Proven experience with PostgreSQL, DynamoDB and database design and optimisation.
- APIs & Microservices: Experience designing, developing and integrating RESTful APIs and microservices-based applications.
- Software Engineering: Strong understanding of automated testing, code quality, secure coding and software development best practices.
- Agile Delivery: Experience working within Agile environments, including Scrum or Kanban.
- Public Sector Experience: Proven experience delivering solutions within public sector or similarly regulated environments.
- Technical Leadership: Ability to mentor developers, contribute to technical decisions and promote engineering excellence.
- Communication & Collaboration: Strong stakeholder engagement, analytical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Desirable skills and experience:
- Experience with Docker and Kubernetes containerisation technologies.
- Knowledge of Infrastructure as Code tools such as Terraform or AWS CloudFormation.
- Familiarity with DevOps practices, CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment tooling.
- Understanding of event-driven architectures and messaging technologies.
