Role Overview
We are looking for a deeply hands-on Senior Java Engineer who can provide technical leadership while continuing to design, build and ship production code. You will work across several backend services rather than being assigned to one isolated project. The environment consists of distributed, cloud-native systems, with Java as the primary language and Python used across parts of the wider platform.
You will collaborate closely with Product Owners, DevOps engineers and other development teams, helping shape technical solutions across multiple services and translating product requirements into scalable backend architecture.
Key Responsibilities:
- Design, build and maintain scalable backend services and APIs, primarily in Java
- Write production-quality code as a core part of your daily work
- Contribute to Python services and codebases when required
- Work across approximately three to four interconnected microservices
- Make and influence technical and architectural decisions
- Break down complex requirements and guide their technical implementation
- Review code and establish strong engineering standards
- Mentor engineers and provide technical guidance without formal line-management responsibility
- Collaborate with Product Owners to evaluate requirements, trade-offs and delivery approaches
- Build and operate cloud-native services, primarily on AWS
- Deploy and run containerised applications using Kubernetes and Docker
- Work with DevOps engineers on CI/CD, deployment, scalability and reliability
- Use data, analytics and operational insights to support technical decisions
- Contribute to testing, documentation and continuous improvement throughout the SDLC
- Support the adoption of AI-assisted engineering tools and solutions where appropriate

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
