Java Engineer

Location: UK-based, hybrid, Manchester 1 x per week
Salary: Competitive base salary plus benefits (DOE)
Role type: Full time, permanent

Role Summary

Amber Labs is seeking a talented Java Engineer to support the delivery of a high profile digital programme within a large scale government environment. This role sits within an established multidisciplinary agile team and will play a key role in building robust, scalable backend services that support critical user facing platforms.

Working closely with Business Analysts, Architects, QA Engineers, and fellow Developers, you will contribute across the full development life cycle, delivering high quality solutions with a strong emphasis on engineering excellence from the outset.

This is an excellent opportunity for a backend-focused Java Engineer who thrives in collaborative environments and is passionate about building well-engineered, long-term solutions.

Key Responsibilities

  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams including Business Analysts, Architects, QA Engineers, and Developers
  • Contribute across the full development life cycle, delivering high quality solutions
  • Emphasize engineering excellence from the outset

Required Skills & Experience

  • Strong backend development experience using Java and Spring Boot
  • Proficiency with Git and modern version control practices
  • Experience building and deploying applications using Docker
  • Good understanding of asynchronous messaging patterns and event-driven architectures
  • Familiarity with CI/CD pipelines and automated deployment practices

Desirable Skills

  • Exposure to Kubernetes (K8s) and container orchestration
  • Experience working with Secure File Transfer Protocol (SFTP) integrations and file transfer solutions
