Senior Java Engineer - High-Volume Payments Platform

Location: London, Canary Wharf (Hybrid – 2-3 days per week onsite)
Employment Type: Full-time, Permanent

The Opportunity

We are looking for a Senior Java Engineer to join a small, elite team working on a high-impact payments platform for a top-tier investment bank. This is not a generic CRUD role. You'll be building and optimising systems that process millions of transactions per second – low-latency, high-throughput, mission-critical. The team is senior, empowered, and takes full ownership of services from design to production support. If you're a hands-on Java engineer who enjoys solving complex performance problems, debugging threading issues, and working with modern tech, this could be the right move for you.

What You'll Be Doing

  • Design, build, and optimise low-latency, high-throughput microservices using Java 21, Spring Boot, Kafka, and Kubernetes
  • Own services end-to-end – from architecture and implementation to deployment and production support
  • Work on concurrency, multithreading, and performance tuning – solving real production problems
  • Collaborate with a small, senior team – no hand-holding, real ownership
  • Drive code quality, engineering standards, and best practices across a wider organisation

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
