Senior Java Developer – Leeds
Please note this role requires 3 days a week at client site due to the nature of work.

About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to join a major Banking & Financial Services programme based in Leeds. This role is ideal for a highly skilled software engineer who thrives within cloud-native environments and enjoys designing, building, and delivering secure, scalable, and high-performing applications.
You will work as part of a multidisciplinary team, contributing to architecture, software development, cloud engineering, security, and DevOps initiatives. The successful candidate will bring strong technical expertise across Java development, AWS cloud services, CI/CD practices, and modern engineering principles while supporting and mentoring junior team members.
Responsibilities
- Design, develop, test, and maintain enterprise-grade applications using Java and related technologies.
- Build and enhance cloud-native solutions using AWS services and modern development practices.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, product teams, and stakeholders to deliver business-critical solutions.
- Contribute to solution architecture and technical design discussions.
- Develop and consume APIs to support integration between business systems and applications.
- Implement secure coding practices and ensure alignment with organisational security standards.
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines to support automated deployment and testing activities.
- Support DevOps and DevSecOps initiatives across the development lifecycle.
- Monitor, troubleshoot, and optimise application performance and reliability.
- Participate in code reviews and champion engineering best practices.
- Mentor and support junior developers within the team.
- Contribute to continuous improvement initiatives across software engineering and delivery processes.

Required Skills
- Strong commercial experience developing applications using Java and/or Kotlin.
- Experience working with AWS cloud technologies.
- Experience with Node.js and TypeScript.
- Strong SQL and database development skills.
- Experience working with relational and NoSQL databases, particularly DynamoDB.
- Strong understanding of software engineering best practices, design patterns, and application architecture.
- Experience designing and maintaining CI/CD pipelines.
- Strong knowledge of Git and GitHub Actions.
- Experience with Docker and containerised deployment approaches.
- Understanding of DevOps and DevSecOps principles.
- Strong understanding of AWS security best practices.
- Excellent communication, stakeholder management, and collaboration skills.
Desirable Skills
- Previous experience working within Banking, Financial Services, or other highly regulated environments.
- Experience supporting cloud migration, platform modernisation, or digital transformation programmes.
- Knowledge of secure software development lifecycle practices.
Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Software Engineering, Information Technology, or a related discipline, or equivalent practical experience.
- Relevant cloud or software engineering certifications are advantageous.
