Senior Java Developer – Aeron & Low-Latency Systems
Location: 2 days a week in London
Employment Type: Full-time or Outside IR35 Contract
About the Role
We are seeking an experienced Senior Java Developer to join an engineering team and work on high-performance, low-latency systems using Java and Aeron.
This is an opportunity to contribute to the design, development, and optimisation of mission-critical software where performance, reliability, and efficiency are essential. You will work alongside talented engineers to build scalable, event-driven solutions and solve complex technical challenges.
Key Responsibilities
- Design, develop, and maintain high-performance Java applications.
- Build and optimise low-latency, high-throughput systems using Aeron.
- Work with Aeron Media Driver, Aeron Cluster, and related messaging technologies.
- Analyse and optimise application performance, latency, memory usage, and garbage collection.
- Develop efficient concurrent and multithreaded software.
- Collaborate with architects, engineers, and stakeholders to deliver robust solutions.
- Write clean, maintainable, and well-tested code.
- Contribute to technical design decisions, code reviews, and engineering best practices.
- Troubleshoot complex production issues and support continuous system improvements.

Essential Skills & Experience
- Strong commercial experience developing software in Java.
- Proven experience working with Aeron or comparable high-performance messaging technologies.
- Solid understanding of low-latency software development and performance optimisation.
- Strong knowledge of Java concurrency, multithreading, and JVM performance tuning.
- Experience with garbage collection, memory management, and efficient data structures.
- Understanding of event-driven architectures and distributed systems.
- Experience with profiling, benchmarking, and performance analysis tools.
- Strong problem-solving skills and the ability to work independently.

Desirable Skills
- Experience with Aeron Cluster, Aeron Archive, or the Aeron Media Driver.
- Knowledge of FIX, financial market data, or electronic trading systems.
- Experience with Linux performance tuning and networking.
- Familiarity with JMH, async-profiler, or similar benchmarking and profiling tools.
- Experience with Test-Driven Development (TDD) and automated testing.
- Understanding of lock-free programming, mechanical sympathy, and zero-copy techniques.
