Overview
Are you an experienced land safety engineer ready to lead work across military vehicles, equipment and emerging technologies? Do you want to shape clear, current and decision-focused assurance that remains useful across acquisition and in-service delivery?
We’re expanding our defence land safety capability. Join us to lead platform- and equipment-level safety work, influence client decisions and develop modern approaches to safety cases, operational hazard management and lifecycle traceability.
AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering services and nuclear organisation delivering complex and critical programmes across defence, aerospace, nuclear and other highly regulated sectors.
Join our established Safety & Environmental Assurance community; knowledge sharing and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. You’ll benefit from:
- Formal technical assurance, peer review and access to experienced land safety specialists.
- Domain Communities of Interest and professional networks.
- Regular team meetings, knowledge-sharing events and informal mentoring.
- Career development support aligned wherever possible to your experience, interests and goals.
We aim to align assignments with your skills, interests and career goals while balancing client and business needs. We welcome experienced applicants from industry, MOD and the Armed Forces, including those returning after a career break. Assignments could include:
- Leading safety cases and assurance strategies for major Army platforms, upgrades and in-service change.
- Transforming safety cases through structured CAE, digital hazard management and lifecycle traceability.
- Integrating safe-to-operate, maintained-correctly and operated-safely arguments across acquisition and in-service organisations.
- Safety leadership for autonomous, software-intensive and multi-system land capabilities.
Your role
You will lead land safety assignments across acquisition and in-service delivery, ensuring that platform- and equipment-level evidence supports practical decisions about integration, acceptance, operation and maintenance. You will provide pragmatic advice and help clients maintain safety arguments that remain current and usable as capabilities and operating contexts change.
- Lead land safety work packages for military vehicles, equipment, integrated capabilities, upgrades and in-service change, balancing quality, schedule and cost.
- Lead the development and assurance of platform and equipment safety cases, design and operational hazard logs and safety management arrangements.
- Shape structured safety arguments covering safe-to-operate, maintained-correctly and operated-safely claims across Delivery Agent, Lead User and other accountable organisations.
- Provide technical direction on platform integration, autonomous or software-intensive capability, trials, land system certification, acceptance, introduction into service and modification.
- Advise Delivery Teams, Delivery Agents, Lead Users, operators, maintainers, suppliers and assurance stakeholders on proportionate and usable safety solutions.
- Review and assure technical outputs, guide hazard workshops and promote consistent land safety practice and lifecycle traceability.
- Help develop future work by understanding emerging client needs, strengthening relationships and supporting follow-on activity where appropriate.
- Contribute to digital safety cases, operational hazard-management approaches, reusable methods and the wider professional community.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
