About This Opportunity
A career as a local government lawyer is both rewarding and challenging. This is a unique opportunity to develop your career within a dynamic legal team to support the Council in its ambitions. Our busy, in-house legal team supports the Council in all aspects of its work, and we are looking for someone who is proactive, innovative, and collaborative and who enjoys a varied and interesting workload. If this sounds like you, then we would love to hear from you!
The Role
As a Senior Lawyer in the Children's Legal Team, you will manage a team of Lawyers, Legal Officers, and Legal Assistants. In addition, you will support the Group Lawyer, Senior Legal Manager, and Chief Legal Officer in delivering an excellent legal service to all local authority departments, with a particular focus on Children's Services.
You will also manage a caseload of complex children's social care matters, including the preparation and conduct of cases before the Family Court, together with advocacy where appropriate. The role will also involve providing legal advice and assistance at all levels across the local authority.
You will be supported by Legal Officers and Legal Assistants, while benefiting from overall supervision and strategic guidance from the Group Lawyer.
In addition, you will contribute to the management and development of the wider Legal Services function and support the organisation in achieving and maintaining high standards of corporate governance and legal practice. I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
