About LJMU

At Liverpool John Moores University, our students thrive because of the people who teach, guide, and inspire them, we truly make a difference. Every year, our commitment to exceptional education attracts talented students from across the UK and the world. This growth is fuelled by inspirational academics, professionals who bring vision, passion, and expertise to their disciplines.

Driven by our continued growth in student numbers and our commitment to delivering outstanding learning, teaching, and research opportunities for our students, we are expanding our academic community. As part of this growth, we are recruiting to a number of key academic positions that will play an integral role in shaping our university’s next chapter.

About The School Of Humanities And Social Science

The School of Humanities and Social Science is an innovative and distinct school. We are leading educators within five subject areas: English Literature, History, Media, Culture and Communication, Sociology and International Relations and Politics. Blending cutting-edge research with innovative teaching and engagement with practitioners, the curriculum that underpins these subject areas is vibrant, student focused and centred on contemporary debates and issues.

The school is committed to producing world-leading research that has impact and reach across the regional, national and global stage. Our distinguished reputation is strengthened by the relationships we have established with key stakeholders outside the University, both locally and internationally, which enhance the student experience and reflect the University’s commitment to be a pioneering and modern civic university.

The International Relations and Politics programme area sits within the People, Politics and Communication department. Following the highly successful introduction of an MA in International Relations in 2017, LJMU started an undergraduate programme in International Relations and Politics in 2019. As part of our strategic expansion, we are also running two new UG degree programmes, one in Criminology and International Relations and the other in Politics, Philosophy, and Economics. This is a great opportunity to be part of a growing department at LJMU.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

The role also involves contributing to teaching at foundation, undergraduate and postgraduate levels more broadly, as needed.

Key responsibilities include:

You will have a PhD level qualification in a relevant discipline (awarded or near completion), with a clear research trajectory aligned with politics and/or international relations. You will also have an HE teaching qualification or commitment to enrol and complete the PGCertLTHE programme. The ability to teach at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in relevant lectures, tutorials and seminars and to supervise postgraduate experience as well as a proven record of ability to conduct high quality research is also essential.
