Reader Grade IA: £69,488 to £73,090
Professor Grade IB:
Band 1: £74,921 to £82,282
Band 2: £84,174 to £111,879

The role
Applications are invited at Senior Lecturer, Reader, or Professor level in Artificial Intelligence. The role will be based in the appropriate school within SAgE faculty, depending on the background and alignment of the candidate: either the School of Computing, or the School of Mathematics, Statistics & Physics (MSP), with a flexible start date to be agreed.
You will be expected to carry out excellent research and teaching in an area of Artificial Intelligence which complements and strengthens existing activities within the Faculty. You will contribute to the research profile of the assigned school by publishing in internationally recognised journals and conferences, demonstrating research impact, and securing external research funding. Additionally, you will be a key contributor to the AI2030 faculty project to broaden our institutional offering in Artificial intelligence, alongside the related Data Science 2030 project. This will comprise a joined up educational offering at UG and PGT level, and will be sector-leading in providing forward-facing AI skills embedded in academic units across all parts of the university. AI2030 will act as a solid platform to build tangible cross-institutional research and business engagement opportunities. AI2030 will be supported by strategic investment and the role holder will be a critical contributor to the success of the project.

Key Accountabilities
The successful candidate will be expected to:
- Provide academic leadership in Artificial Intelligence, shaping research direction and contributing to the strategic development of the school.
- Lead and contribute to interdisciplinary research initiatives across Artificial Intelligence and related fields. Publish refereed articles in venues of international standing appropriate to Artificial Intelligence.
- Collaborate with colleagues in the relevant section of the home school, and with colleagues from other disciplines within the university on Artificial Intelligence.
- Seek out funding opportunities and develop grant-funded research projects.
- Attract, supervise, and mentor doctoral researchers and postdoctoral associates across a broad range of Artificial Intelligence disciplines.
- Build and maintain strategic links with industry, government and external stakeholders in order to contribute to the development of applied, methodological, or theoretical aspects of AI technologies.
- Lead the design and delivery of research-inspired teaching.
- Deliver high-quality teaching, assessment, and student support at undergraduate and postgraduate levels in the area of AI and beyond, in accordance with the requirements of the home School.
- Contribute to programme development, accreditation, and academic leadership in education across a broad range of AI disciplines.
- Fully engage with Newcastle's Leading Edge Curriculum redevelopment, ensuring that our students’ learning is enriched through engagement with research, industry, practice and society.
- Carry out administrative duties as assigned by the Head of School and the School Executive Board.

The Person
Knowledge, Skills and Experience
Essential criteria - Senior Lecturer (Grade H)
- Ability to deliver high-quality, research-led teaching in Artificial Intelligence, using appropriate technologies to engage and support students, including supervision of undergraduate and postgraduate projects.
- Experience leading programme-level design and delivery of teaching, learning and assessment strategies.
- A strong, sustained international research profile with a consistent track record of high-quality outputs and recognition.
- A record of successful research income generation, either in own name or as a major contributor, with evidence of leading collaborative research success in Artificial Intelligence.
- A strong track record of successful supervision of PhD students and postdoctoral researchers students, alongside consistent supervision of UG/PG research projects.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor junior colleagues, lead teams, initiatives or strategic areas within the School, contributing to its wider academic and operational leadership.
- Ability to work collaboratively across disciplines and contribute to team-based activity, with emerging engagement with external stakeholders to support research impact.
- Strong communication, organisational and time management skills, with the ability to contribute positively to School priorities, strategy and academic community.
Additional Criteria – Reader
- An outstanding research profile commensurate with career stage, with a strong publication record in Artificial Intelligence, evidenced by publications in leading venues and other esteem indicators appropriate to Artificial Intelligence.
- Strong ability to effectively teach at university level, including experience of programme development. Evidence of development of, and ability to deliver, innovative and effective teaching and learning materials across a broad range of Mathematical or Computing Science and AI modules with an ability to create ideas for course development at undergraduate and postgraduate levels.
- Excellent written and oral communications skills, and ability to engage effectively across the academic unit, Faculty and external stakeholders.
- Ability to proactively lead on ambitious academic initiatives such as AI 2030, that can contribute to our institutional portfolio in AI, for example, large-scale funding opportunities and/or new education provision.
- Experience of university leadership or significant administrative roles, and management in academic or industrial settings, with the ability to motivate, empower, and support colleagues in a collaborative and consultative environment.
- Strategic thinking, with experience of contributing to organisational development and change.
- Significant experience of managing projects and leading a group of researchers (Desirable).
- Evidence of supporting cross-disciplinary research (Desirable).

Additional Criteria – Professor
- An internationally recognised research leader with a substantial record of publications in leading journals and conference proceedings, significant research funding, and demonstrable impact.
- A proven ability to lead large-scale, collaborative research programmes or institutional initiatives.
- A sustained record of academic leadership, including contributions to School, Faculty, or national-level strategy.

Qualifications
- A degree (or equivalent) in Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related discipline such as Mathematics, Computing, Data Science, or Machine Learning.
- Completed PhD in Artificial Intelligence, or a closely related discipline such as Mathematics, Computing, Data Science, or Machine Learning.
- HE teaching qualification (or equivalent experience).
- A relevant Professional Body Membership as appropriate to the subject area (Desirable).
