Job context
The Directorate of Governance and Legal Services comprises expert teams in governance, compliance, policy, casework and legal, working with a common purpose to protect the University’s interests whilst enabling innovation and the achievement of the University’s objectives. The Directorate works collaboratively across the University community to develop awareness of policy and regulations, legal issues and external compliance. Within the Directorate, the Legal team is responsible for providing legal advice across a wide range of matters relating to Queen Mary.
Job purpose
Reporting to the General Counsel, the Senior Legal Counsel provides expert advice to colleagues across the University on a broad range of contentious, advisory, and transactional legal matters. A key focus of the role involves the drafting, negotiation and review of contracts that span the full range of business activity, including: educational partnerships, commercial contracts, consultancy, and ad-hoc agreements as required.

The Senior Legal Counsel will also contribute to the operations of the wider Legal team, and support broader governance, legal, and administrative projects.

Main duties and responsibilities
- To support academic and professional services staff in the drafting, negotiating and reviewing contracts across the full range of University business. The Senior Legal Counsel will be the key point of contact for contract advice, updating and escalating to the General Counsel as appropriate.
- Exercising sound judgment in providing legal advice on other legal matters and areas of law relating to the University, including: data protection; intellectual property; regulatory compliance; consumer protection, public law, charity law, and litigation and dispute resolution. Updating and escalating to the General Counsel as appropriate.
- Capturing and maintaining legal knowledge within Legal, including developing and maintaining legal precedents and templates.
- Developing and maintaining strong relationships at all levels of the University, including through clear and timely communication.
- Maintaining and strengthening Queen Mary’s relationship with external counsel and instructing external counsel as appropriate, in consultation with the General Counsel;
- Utilising professional knowledge to recognise, understand and protect the rights of the University and individual members of staff.
- Maintaining an awareness of changes in relevant areas of law, external compliance matters and University policies and procedures.
- Developing training for staff across the University as needed.
- Employing expert time management and project management skills to manage a dynamic workload with multiple competing deadlines to provide timely, accessible, pragmatic, and effective work output.
- Initiating and progressing broader strategic, governance, or legal projects, as appropriate.
