Senior Legal Counsel – Capital Markets

Location: London – 4/5 days a week in office

An exciting opportunity has arisen for an experienced Legal Counsel to join a highly regarded Global Markets Legal team supporting Sales & Trading activities across the EMEA region.

This role will partner closely with front office teams, providing legal advice and strategic support across a broad range of rates, credit, derivatives and financing products. The successful candidate will act as a trusted adviser to business stakeholders, helping to navigate complex regulatory requirements whilst supporting commercial objectives and managing legal risk.

This position offers significant exposure to senior stakeholders, complex cross-border matters and strategic initiatives within a fast-paced international financial markets environment.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide clear, practical and commercially focused legal advice to Sales & Trading businesses across EMEA.
  • Draft, review and negotiate a wide range of documentation, including:
    • Electronic trading agreements
    • Exchange and platform documentation
    • Clearing arrangements
    • FX documentation
    • Client-facing trading and financing documentation
  • Advise on legal, regulatory, structuring and execution matters relating to Global Markets activities.
  • Interpret and apply complex regulatory frameworks, including MiFID II, MAR and EMIR.
  • Support new product launches, trading initiatives and business growth projects.
  • Assess legal, regulatory and reputational risks and provide appropriate solutions and escalation recommendations.
  • Monitor market and regulatory developments affecting Sales & Trading businesses.
  • Support dispute management, remediation programmes and governance initiatives.
  • Build strong working relationships with stakeholders across legal, compliance, risk, operations and front office teams.
  • Contribute to legal process improvement, knowledge management and technology initiatives, including the adoption of AI tools within legal operations.
  • Provide day-to-day legal support on transactional, strategic and operational matters.

  • Qualified lawyer with at least 8 years' post-qualification experience.
  • Strong experience gained within a leading law firm and/or financial institution.
  • Deep understanding of Global Markets, Sales & Trading and Capital Markets activities.
  • Strong working knowledge of key regulatory frameworks including MiFID II, MAR and EMIR.
  • Experience drafting, negotiating and advising on capital markets and trading documentation.
  • Proven ability to advise on complex, multi-jurisdictional matters.
  • Experience operating in a fast-paced in-house legal environment.
  • Ability to provide practical, real-time legal advice aligned to trading and business timelines.
  • Excellent stakeholder management and relationship-building skills.
  • Strong communication skills with the ability to explain complex legal concepts clearly to diverse audiences.
  • Demonstrable risk management capability and sound commercial judgement.
  • Experience using AI-enabled legal technologies and innovative approaches to legal problem-solving.
