Senior Life Underwriter

Bristol, Leatherhead, Norwich, Sheffield or York — and we’re happy to consider homeworking if none of these locations are within a reasonable commute for you.

Competitive salary

If you’re an experienced Life Underwriter looking to stay relevant in a changing market and build deep technical expertise that sets you apart, this is a role where you can do exactly that. You’ll be joining a business that’s investing in the future of underwriting. From automation to AI-enabled insight, we’re using technology to support better decision making and help you stay at the forefront of how the role is evolving.

A bit about the job:

Our Senior Underwriters focus on the most complex Protection cases — the ones that need human judgement. It’s an opportunity to strengthen your technical credibility and build your knowledge across a broad range of case types. You’ll work alongside experienced colleagues across the team and play an active role in supporting others through coaching and mentoring. This is a role for someone who wants to keep pushing their expertise, work on intellectually stretching cases and play an active part in how underwriting continues to evolve at Aviva.

What you’ll be doing:

  • Assessing complex Life Insurance, Critical Illness and Income Protection cases, using sound judgement to deliver high-quality underwriting decisions across medical, financial and lifestyle risk factors.
  • Using insights from underwriting tools and technology to inform decisions, while retaining accountability for outcomes.
  • Supporting less experienced underwriters through coaching, mentoring and day to-day guidance.
  • Contributing to technical capability across the team by sharing knowledge and helping others to grow.
  • Working with colleagues and stakeholders to improve underwriting quality, consistency and customer outcomes.
  • Contributing to continuous improvement in underwriting delivery and ways of working.

Reasons to use Rodeo

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
