We’re one of the largest banking and financial services organisations in the world, with a network that covers more than 50 countries and territories. We aim to be where the growth is, enabling businesses to thrive and economies to prosper, and, ultimately, helping people fulfil their hopes and realise their ambitions.

HSBC Alternatives is the alternative investment arm of HSBC Asset Management, investing globally across Private Credit, Private Markets, Hedge Funds, Real Estate, Infrastructure, and Venture Capital. With ~USD 85.3bn AUM and ~300 colleagues across 10 offices, we’re building scalable, well-controlled operating models that support growth.

We’re looking for an experienced operations leader to join our Direct Alternatives Investment Operations team, focusing on Private Credit products (funds and mandates) on a secondment basis. Reporting to the Head of Direct Alternatives Investment Operations, you’ll provide hands-on oversight across the investment lifecycle, partner closely with front office and control functions, and help drive process, data, and system improvements—while maintaining strong risk discipline in a controlled function environment.

As an HSBC employee in the UK, you’ll have access to tailored professional development opportunities and a competitive pay and benefits package. This includes private healthcare for all UK-based employees, enhanced maternity and adoption pay and support when you return to work, and a contributory pension scheme with a generous employer contribution.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

In this role you’ll:

  • Lead day-to-day oversight of end-to-end investment operations for Private Credit strategies (e.g., Direct Lending, Infrastructure Debt, Venture Debt, Revolving Credit, Trade Finance) across funds and mandates.
  • Oversee transaction and trade services, including execution support, settlement, review/administration of legal documentation, and monitoring of investment restrictions with a risk-centric approach.
  • Support new product launches and subsequent closings, contributing to operating model design, operational set-up, and calculations such as equalisation.
  • Provide valuation and performance oversight, including NAV review, support for hard-to-value assets, waterfalls/carry, income reconciliations, and calculations.
  • Manage liquidity and treasury activities including cashflow forecasting, calls/distributions analysis, facilities (credit/overdraft), hedging and FX operations.
  • Own stakeholder and vendor oversight, contribute to investor/portfolio reporting, and drive continuous improvement, change delivery, and control effectiveness.

To be successful in this role you should meet the following requirements:

  • Strong experience in investment operations within alternatives is essential, with demonstrable focus on Private Credit and loan-style instruments being desirable.
  • Proven capability overseeing complex operational deliverables: documentation, restrictions monitoring, NAV/valuation governance, and portfolio/investor reporting in a controlled environment.
  • Solid understanding of private asset valuation concepts, performance mechanics (e.g., waterfalls/carry), and reconciliations; comfort working with hard-to-value assets.
  • Experience supporting product launches/structuring and building operating models, including service provider oversight and operational infrastructure set-up.
  • Track record of effective risk and control execution (operational risk framework, compliance considerations, regulatory/tax change implementation), with confidence escalating and resolving issues.
  • Strong stakeholder management skills across investment teams, Product, Legal, Compliance, Risk & Control, IT, and external administrators/managers; able to coach and develop junior/offshore colleagues.
