Email & Collaboration Threat Protection at Mimecast
This is a hands-on engineering leadership role at the heart of Mimecast's Email & Collaboration Threat Protection platform. Our mission-critical infrastructure processes over 1.7 billion emails every day for more than 42,000 enterprise customers worldwide, and keeping it fast, reliable, and secure is non-negotiable.
Reporting to the Director of R&D for Email & Collaboration Threat Protection, you will lead one or more engineering squads directly, with accountability for delivery, engineering quality, and the health and growth of your team. You lead through people and technical judgement, setting near-term direction, developing engineers, and creating the conditions for consistent, high-quality delivery.
This is not a role for someone who wants to sit at a distance from the work. You will stay close to the engineering, own the delivery of your squad's roadmap, and hold a high bar on quality and reliability at massive scale. We operate with a sense of urgency. Cyber threats don't wait, and neither do we. You'll lead a team that moves fast, makes decisions with conviction, and delivers results.
What You'll Do:
- Own Squad Delivery: Lead one or more engineering squads with full accountability for delivery outcomes, team health, and day-to-day execution. Plan and manage the flow of work across sprints, remove blockers, and ensure your squad ships reliably against its roadmap commitments.
- Develop Engineers: Line-manage, coach, and grow the engineers on your team. Run regular one-to-ones, set clear goals, give honest feedback, and build deliberate development paths for individuals across levels. Identify and grow high-potential talent.
- Champion Engineering Excellence: Set and uphold high standards within your squad for code quality, testing, observability, release governance, incident response, and secure development practices. Own operational excellence on a zero-downtime, globally distributed platform, including on-call quality, post-incident learning, and continuous reliability improvement.
- Contribute to Technical Direction: Translate the roadmap and product priorities into a credible delivery plan for your squad. Contribute to technical design discussions and architecture decisions, and act as an informed engineering voice for Email & Collaboration Threat Protection within your group.
- Champion AI-Augmented Development: Drive adoption of AI development tools across your squad. Apply the team's governance for responsible AI usage and help measure productivity impact. Lead by example in building an AI-enabled engineering culture.
- Stakeholder Management: Partner with Product Management, and with Security and Operations counterparts, to align on priorities, resolve dependencies, and keep the roadmap grounded in what the team can realistically deliver. Communicate progress, risks, and trade-offs clearly to your Director and to peers.
- Operational Accountability: Own the reliability and performance of the services your squad runs. Our platform processes over 1.7 billion emails daily; you'll ensure robust monitoring, a healthy on-call rotation, timely incident response, and follow-through on post-incident actions.
- People Leadership: Contribute to hiring for your squad, including interviewing and levelling input. Manage performance decisively, address engagement and attrition signals early, and help build a team culture people want to be part of.

What You'll Bring:
- 6+ years of software development experience with progressive engineering leadership responsibilities.
- 2+ years in engineering management, directly line-managing a team of engineers.
- Proven track record of leading a squad to deliver consistently, with evidence of improving execution quality and team health over time.
- Strong record of turning product priorities into deliverable engineering plans and communicating credibly with product and engineering stakeholders.
- Background in high-availability, mission-critical distributed systems, sufficient to lead credibly and contribute to technical decisions alongside senior engineers.
- A solid hands-on software engineering background, giving you a credible technical foundation for leading a deep engineering team.
- Experience with modern engineering practices: microservices architecture, CI/CD pipelines (Jenkins, GitHub Actions), infrastructure as code (Terraform), and containerization (Docker/Kubernetes).
- Experience with cloud platforms (AWS preferred) and monitoring/observability tooling.
- Experience partnering with Product Management to drive roadmap execution and deliver customer value.
- Excellent communication, collaboration, coaching, and mentoring skills, with a track record of building and sustaining a high-performing team.
- Experience delivering software in Agile environments with a strong understanding of DevSecOps practices.
AI Fluency
As we build an AI-First engineering culture, we expect engineering leaders to champion and model AI-augmented development:
- Demonstrated experience: with AI-powered development tools such as GitHub Copilot, Cursor, Windsurf, Claude, or similar assistants, OR
- Strong enthusiasm: and commitment to rapidly adopting AI tools and driving their adoption across your team.
You will be expected to lead by example, integrating AI tools into your own practices and encouraging their adoption across your squad.

- Experience in email security, messaging infrastructure, or cybersecurity product development. Experience with email protocols (SMTP, IMAP), authentication standards (SPF, DKIM, DMARC), or threat detection systems.
- Experience contributing to engineering transformation or platform decomposition initiatives.
- Background in SaaS product development with multi-tenant architecture.
- Engineering or Computer Science degree.
Location
This role is based in London. You will lead a team located in London and Bangalore and collaborate with teams located globally. This is a hybrid role with a minimum of two days a week on site in our London office.

The base salary range for this position is £96,000−£144,000 plus benefits. This range represents the minimum and maximum new hire compensation for this role. The position may also be eligible for incentive plans and additional benefits, in accordance with company policy and local regulations. Our salary ranges are determined by role, level, and location with individual compensation also dependent on factors such as qualifications, experience, and skills. Final offers will reflect these considerations and may vary accordingly.
