As a nation, we’re working towards the goal of net zero carbon by 2050. At National Grid, we’re committed to helping Britain reach this target by building a cleaner, greener energy system. But we can’t do this alone. We're looking for people who are brimming with enthusiasm and bursting with ideas to help us build and run a cleaner energy system for the future. Are you up for the challenge?
We’re looking for an experienced Senior Manager – Group Technical Accounting to join our Group External Reporting team on a 12-month full-time contract. This role is suited to someone who can quickly bring strong IFRS technical expertise, judgement and senior stakeholder management skills to support a busy Group reporting and technical accounting agenda. You will help maintain the Group’s IFRS accounting policies, including leading or supporting projects to assess new exposure drafts and accounting developments. You will also support the implementation of new accounting standards, helping to develop or update National Grid accounting policies and communicate practical guidance to accounting teams across the Group.
This is a 12-month full-time contract role based out of our Strand office. We are looking for someone who can make an early impact, work pragmatically with senior finance stakeholders and provide additional technical accounting capacity during a period of important reporting and policy activity. We’d hope to see you in the office at least two days per week, with flexibility to discuss working patterns that help the role work effectively for you and the team.
What You'll Do
- Act as the expert lead for IFRS and UK GAAP technical accounting by providing advice and solutions for the accounting and reporting issues encountered on a day-to-day basis across the Group.
- Draft technical accounting papers for review by Deloitte, obtaining swift sign-off on the proposed conclusions in order to establish the accounting principles to be applied by local and Group accounting teams, and supporting teams to understand the agreed accounting conclusions and working with them to implement on an operational basis.
- Review technical accounting papers produced by our US team who draft papers on both the US GAAP and IFRS conclusions, ensuring agreement and sign-off on the Group IFRS impacts.
- Support projects to implement new accounting standards as relevant to National Grid.
- Support the maintenance and development of Group accounting policies disclosed in the Annual Report and Accounts, helping to ensure policies remain up to date with the latest changes and guidance and are communicated clearly to the businesses and external stakeholders.
- Take a leading role in cross-functional working groups (including Legal, Co-Sec, Tax, Treasury, M&A and other businesses as applicable) to provide accounting advice and solutions for internal and external transactions, for example re-organisations or acquisitions and disposals.
- Build relationships with external auditors and the internal business to make sure their requirements are understood and implemented within the team.
- Bring external perspective and current technical accounting insight to help the team apply best practice and maintain high-quality reporting outcomes.
- Ensure the wider finance community at National Grid is kept abreast of technical developments through the running of technical seminars, updates and presentations as required.
- Produce and review disclosures and operate and review key Sox controls for the half year results statement and year-end annual report and accounts.
- Liaise with the external auditors Deloitte on requested deliverables and on issues arising during the statutory reporting process.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
