I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Start with a chat, not a search bar

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.

No noise. No "maybe this fits." Just roles with a clear explanation of why they're right — and where to focus when applying.

A big early job is setting up a new Command Centre. The current Major Incident Management (MIM) team will run it, with a wider remit, to coordinate how Engineering responds when something goes wrong.

You know enough about the technology to ask the right questions and push teams to plan for the worst. You report clearly, work well with people, and are happy to take the lead without waiting to be asked.

WHAT YOU'LL BE DOING:

Cyber recovery and DR: Ask infrastructure, cyber, and application teams the hard questions about how they would recover from a serious attack — not a simple failover, but a full, damaging event. Check that their plans for things like isolated recovery, immutable backups, and clean-room rebuilds are real, tested, and written down. You will not design the solutions yourself, but you will know enough to test the thinking. Make sure DR is treated as a P1, and that recovery plans, dependencies, and the order of recovery stay accurate and well tested. Help plan and join up data centre testing across the Group.

Business continuity and the Command Centre: Work within the Group business continuity approach rather than owning it. Help set up the new Command Centre and settle how it runs day to day. The MIM team will be the way into Engineering when a business continuity event happens, working closely with Crisis Management and the engineering teams. Train the MIM team and run tabletop exercises so everyone knows how the Command Centre should work.

Standards, governance, and reporting: Look after our IT service continuity standards and controls, including who does what and how often we review them. Keep an independent eye on how ready we really are, with a clear, evidenced view of the gaps and what is being done about them. Write clear reports for senior leaders and the governance groups, keep evidence ready for audit, and be a first point of contact for audit, risk, and the regulators. Track actions through to done.

Working with people and improving how we work: Build good relationships with senior people in risk, engineering, and the business, and bring them together when priorities pull in different directions. Coach colleagues and the MIM team. Keep improving our processes, automation, and tools (including Cutover and Fusion Risk Management), using AI where it helps. Keep runbooks, playbooks, and test records up to date and easy to use in a real event. Be there during major incidents and DR events, including out of hours when needed.
