Job Description
Overview
Are you an experienced maritime safety engineer ready to lead assurance across complex naval platforms and systems? Do you want to shape technical strategies, integrate evidence and advise clients across procurement, acceptance and in-service support?
We’re expanding our defence maritime safety capability. Join us to lead work across surface ships, submarines, naval systems, platform integration, upgrades and in-service change, while helping strengthen our wider safety and assurance offering.
AtkinsRéalis is a world-class engineering services and nuclear organisation delivering complex and critical programmes across defence, aerospace, nuclear and other highly regulated sectors.
Join our established Safety & Environmental Assurance community; knowledge sharing and collaboration are at the heart of what we do. You’ll benefit from:
- Formal technical assurance, peer review and access to experienced maritime safety specialists.
- Domain Communities of Interest and professional networks.
- Regular team meetings, knowledge-sharing events and informal mentoring.
- Career development support aligned wherever possible to your experience, interests and goals.
We aim to align assignments with your skills, interests and career goals while balancing client and business needs. We welcome experienced applicants from industry, MOD and the Armed Forces, including those returning after a career break. Assignments could include:
- Leading safety cases, risk assessments and ALARP demonstrations for surface ships, submarines and naval systems.
- Supporting platform certification and assurance through engagement with naval authorities and delivery organisations.
- Advising on safety implications of design integration, upgrades, maintenance and operational change.
- Developing digital, data-led and CAE approaches that make safety information more current and usable.
Your Role
You will lead maritime safety assignments at enterprise, platform or system level across the naval capability lifecycle. You will bring together equipment, system and supplier evidence into coherent platform-level safety arguments, provide trusted advice on compliance with Defence Maritime Regulations and help clients manage safety risks and change through procurement, acceptance and in-service support.
- Lead maritime safety work packages for surface ships, submarines, naval systems, platform integration, upgrades and in-service change, balancing quality, schedule and cost.
- Lead the development and assurance of Safety and Environmental Cases, Safety Case Reports, Safety and Environmental Management Plans, risk assessments, ALARP demonstrations and hazard logs.
- Shape Claims, Arguments and Evidence that bring together equipment-, system- and supplier-level evidence into a coherent ship- or submarine-level safety case.
- Provide technical direction on safety interfaces, configuration management, maintenance, refit, upgrade and operational change.
- Advise Delivery Teams, Design Authorities, Platform Authorities, operators, maintainers, suppliers and Naval Authority stakeholders on regulatory compliance and proportionate assurance.
- Lead or support assurance against Defence Maritime Regulations and relevant Risk Control Systems, including independent review and platform-certification activity where appropriate.
- Review and assure technical outputs, guide multidisciplinary teams and promote safety information that remains current and usable through life.
- Help develop future work by understanding emerging client needs, strengthening relationships and supporting follow-on activity where appropriate.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.
