About The Role

As a result, alongside several consortium partners; Balfour Beatty have been selected by bp (British Petroleum) to construct a first-of-a-kind fully integrated gas-fired power station with carbon capture and storage which is a key driving force behind plans to make Teesside the UK’s first decarbonised industrial cluster.

Balfour Beatty is seeking a dynamic Senior Materials Controller to contribute to the Net Zero Teesside (NZT) project based at our site in Redcar and Cleveland.

Role Purpose: The principal function of the Senior Materials Controller is to plan, coordinate and control the supply of concrete, aggregates and other designated construction materials required by the project.

The role is responsible for converting construction demand into an accurate and controlled material delivery schedule, placing and managing supplier call-offs, coordinating deliveries with site teams and maintaining a comprehensive auditable record of all materials ordered, delivered, cancelled, rejected and used.

The Senior Materials Controller will provide clear visibility of current and future material demand and will identify supply constraints, booking conflicts, abnormal demand or potential shortages early enough for corrective action to be taken.

What you'll be doing

  • Work with Agents, Sub Agents, Engineers, Supervisors, General Foremen and Planning teams to identify upcoming material requirements.
  • Maintain a forward material demand schedule covering planned construction activities.
  • Review short-term and medium-term construction programmes to identify concrete, aggregate and bulk material requirements.
  • Confirm quantities, material specification, required date, delivery location and relevant site contact before bookings are made.
  • Identify unusual or significant material requirements early and confirm supplier capacity.
  • Highlight potential material shortages or supply constraints before they affect construction.
  • Identify peak demand periods and coordinate priorities where several work fronts require materials at the same time.

Who we're looking for

The Following Experience And Qualities Are Essential

  • Previous experience in a Materials Controller, Senior Materials Controller, Logistics Coordinator, Materials Coordinator or similar construction role.
  • Ability to prioritise material requirements where demand exceeds available supply or delivery capacity.
  • Experience coordinating construction materials across a busy site or major project.
  • Experience managing material call-offs and supplier deliveries.
  • Good understanding of concrete, aggregates and bulk construction materials.
  • Experience coordinating concrete bookings or high-volume material deliveries.
  • Experience with delivery tickets, material quantities, stock records and reconciliations.
  • Ability to interpret construction programmes and convert upcoming activities into material demand.
  • Strong organisational skills and ability to coordinate several work fronts at the same time.
  • Good communication skills and confidence dealing directly with suppliers, supervisors, engineers and managers.
  • Good attention to detail and confidence working with significant quantities of operational data.
  • Good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel, Outlook and other standard Microsoft Office applications.
  • Experience using electronic material, procurement, logistics or delivery management systems.
  • Good understanding of construction logistics and vehicle movements.
  • Ability to work independently and take ownership of material coordination activities.
  • Willingness to work adjusted hours, weekends or nights where material operations require coverage

The Following Experience Would Be Beneficial

  • Experience on major infrastructure, energy, highways, rail, industrial, process, water or heavy civil engineering projects.
  • Experience coordinating significant volumes of ready-mixed concrete.
  • Experience coordinating aggregates, earthworks materials or bulk fill.
  • Understanding of concrete mix designations, delivery tickets and concrete pour requirements.
  • Understanding of aggregate specifications and common construction material classifications.
  • Experience using Vehicle Management Systems or delivery booking systems.
  • Experience working with weighbridge information and material tonnage records.
  • Experience with stockpile management and material reconciliation.
  • Experience producing material forecasts and demand schedules.
  • Experience supporting commercial reconciliation of material accounts.
  • Experience analysing supplier delivery performance.
  • Experience leading or supervising Materials Controllers or logistics administration staff.
  • CSCS card appropriate to the role.
  • Relevant logistics, construction, materials management or supply-chain qualification.
