You will support the work of the business to establish safe working practices and necessary level of documentation. You will be involved with projects from the planning / assembly / instrumentation / commissioning phase though to successfully performing and reporting the test. You will also be responsible for providing specialist support to existing programmes within your field of expertise, helping to resolve manufacturing issues and supporting continuous improvement efforts.

Job Responsibilities

  • Development of manufacturing processes in relation to transparent polymer and adhesive materials
  • Qualification of materials and processes to ensure they comply with the requirements
  • Lead thin film polymer coatings projects
  • Lead material obsolescence and REACh affected material replacement projects
  • Interact with different levels of leadership across the business, reporting progress to senior managers and site leadership team.
  • Work closely with Principle Materials Engineer to effectively manage the Material Obsolescence process
  • Collect inputs, related to a task and take it through an identified process to produce an output / deliverable adhering to quality and schedule requirements.
  • Exemplifying a safety-first mind-set and ensuring compliance with the GKN Aerospace Health, Safety and Environmental policies and standards.
  • Supporting production material related queries and issues, regarding re-life, testing and investigations.
  • Developing, optimizing and maintaining specifications and handbooks related to non-metallic polymers; ensuring they are compliant with all relevant customer, regulatory, and airworthiness requirements.
  • Preparing and defining tests/test plans; critical and systematic interpretation and analysis of test data, applying the outcome of tests for substantiation of specification changes.
  • Defining activities in a project-oriented fashion with identification of deliverables, milestones and associated planning.
  • Troubleshooting and production support on Materials Issues (e.g. Polymers and bonding).
  • Interfacing with customers on a technical (M&T) level.
  • Maintaining contacts with suppliers regarding alternative/new products.
  • Integration into the wider, global engineering function, collaborating with other sites around the world.
  • Contribute to the development of GKN as a 'great place to work', aligned with the core principles - safe, innovative, open & honest, care & respect, and ownership.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?

Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.

Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
