Location: North London

Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role
A Global Engineering & Manufacturing Giant, specialising in the design and manufacture of high reliability/high integrity engineered products, is looking to recruit a Senior Mechanical Design Engineer on a Staff basis, owing to an internal promotion and succession planning within the business.
This is a unique opportunity for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to move into a genuine product ownership role, becoming the technical authority for a range of established products used across multiple industrial sectors.
Working closely with Manufacturing, Quality, Supply Chain, and customers, you'll be responsible for driving continuous improvement, cost reduction, product robustness, and lifecycle management activities whilst ensuring products remain compliant, competitive, and aligned with future customer requirements.
The business has ambitious growth plans and is investing significantly in both its engineering capability and product portfolio, creating excellent long-term progression opportunities for the successful candidate.
The Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role
This position sits between traditional Design Engineering and Technical Leadership.
Rather than focusing purely on developing new products, you'll take ownership of existing products throughout their lifecycle, ensuring they continue to meet customer, manufacturing, and regulatory requirements whilst driving improvements in cost, quality, reliability, and performance.
You'll work closely with a global NPD function, taking ownership of products once they have been released into production and becoming the recognised Subject Matter Expert internally and externally.
Alongside standard product development activities, you'll support engineered-to-order and customer-specific solutions across a diverse range of industrial sectors.
This role offers significant exposure to customers and stakeholders, with the opportunity to influence product strategy, future product development, and engineering best practice.

Key Responsibilities of Senior Mechanical Design Engineer
- Take technical ownership of an established mechanical and electromechanical product portfolio
- Act as the recognised Subject Matter Expert for assigned products
- Drive product improvement, value engineering, and cost reduction initiatives
- Improve product reliability, manufacturability, and long-term design robustness
- Review and approve engineering designs, drawings, and technical documentation
- Support product compliance and ensure adherence to relevant engineering standards and regulations
- Work closely with Manufacturing, Quality, and Supply Chain teams to improve product performance and resolve technical issues
- Lead engineering investigations, root cause analysis, and corrective actions
- Support validation, verification, and testing activities
- Develop bespoke and customised engineering solutions to meet customer requirements
- Participate in customer meetings to understand technical requirements and deliver practical engineering solutions
- Support competitor analysis and future product roadmap activities
- Provide technical leadership, mentoring, and engineering guidance to the wider team
Requirements for Senior Mechanical Design Engineer Role
Essential:
- BEng or HND in Mechanical Engineering (or similar)
- Proven Mechanical Design Engineering experience within a manufacturing environment
- Experience taking ownership of products throughout their lifecycle
- Strong Design for Manufacture (DFM) experience
- Experience working with machined components, castings, mouldings, fabricated assemblies, and welded structures
- Strong understanding of manufacturing and assembly processes
- Experience working to engineering standards, specifications, and technical compliance requirements
- Strong stakeholder management and customer-facing skills
- Experience working closely with Quality, Manufacturing, and Supply Chain functions
- Ability to balance technical performance, manufacturability, quality, and commercial objectives
- Excellent problem-solving and continuous improvement experience
Desirable:
- SolidWorks experience
- GD&T and BS8888
- FEA and tolerance stack-up analysis
- DFMEA and PFMEA
- Jig, tooling, and fixture design
- Product validation and testing experience
- Sheet metal design experience
- Experience mentoring or supporting engineers
- Experience within Aerospace, Oil & Gas, Marine, Offshore, Defence, Nuclear, Rail, or other highly regulated engineering environments
