Mechanical Design Engineer

Sapien are working with a specialist engineering business operating within the heavy engineering, lifting equipment, and bespoke machinery sector based near West Bromwich.

This is an excellent opportunity for an engineer who enjoys taking ownership of projects from initial concept through to detailed design, manufacture, testing, and installation, with the opportunity to develop into a senior technical leadership position over time.

Job Responsibilities:

  • Developing bespoke mechanical designs from initial concept through to detailed manufacturing drawings.
  • Producing engineering calculations, including hand calculations, Excel-based calculations, and FEA.
  • Preparing design documentation, technical reports, risk assessments, and compliance documentation.
  • Selecting and specifying mechanical components and equipment.
  • Ensuring designs are practical, safe, and cost-effective to manufacture.
  • Working closely with fabrication, welding, and manufacturing teams throughout production.
  • Providing technical support during testing, installation, and commissioning.
  • Supporting customer requirements at both tender and manufacturing stages.
  • Carrying out site visits where required to gather information, discuss solutions, and support commissioning.
  • Ensuring designs comply with relevant UK and international standards and legislation.
  • Maintaining accurate design records and quality documentation.
  • Supporting and checking the work of other members of the design team.

Experience Required

  • Experience as a Mechanical Design Engineer, Senior Design Engineer.
  • Experience designing bespoke or special-purpose machinery.
  • Strong mechanical engineering fundamentals and an understanding of mechanics of materials.
  • Experience carrying out stress analysis and engineering calculations.
  • Practical experience with FEA / finite element analysis.
  • Strong 3D CAD experience, ideally with Autodesk Inventor.
  • Experience producing detailed manufacturing and fabrication drawings.
  • A good understanding of manufacturing processes, particularly fabrication, welding, and machining.
  • Experience designing lifting equipment would be highly advantageous.
  • An understanding of UK machinery and workplace safety legislation, including LOLER, PUWER, and UKCA.
