Role & Responsibilities
We are looking for an experienced Senior Mechanical Design Engineer to take technical ownership of complex mechanical components, assemblies and sub-systems from concept through to production-intent release.
This is a hands-on engineering role combining strong mechanical design, CAD and drawing capability with senior-level engineering judgement and component ownership. You will develop and mature engineering solutions through concept, detailed design, analysis, prototype build, verification and release, ensuring technical risks are understood and appropriately managed.
Reporting to the Head of Mechanical, Design, Analysis and Integration and working closely with Systems Engineering, CAE, Manufacturing, Quality, Procurement and suppliers, you will help deliver robust, manufacturable, serviceable and validated engineering solutions while balancing product performance, quality, cost, mass, technical risk and programme timing.
Responsibilities include:
- Own mechanical components, assemblies and work packages from concept through verification and production release.
- Develop concepts, 3D CAD, assemblies and production-intent engineering drawings.
- Apply engineering principles, materials knowledge, GD&T, tolerance analysis and first-principles calculations to develop robust solutions.
- Design for performance, durability, manufacture, assembly, sealing, corrosion resistance and serviceability.
- Work with CAE and Validation to define load cases, review results and provide evidence supporting design decisions and requirement compliance.
- Lead or support design reviews, DFMEA and technical risk assessments, ensuring risks and failure modes are understood and mitigated.
- Support prototype builds, suppliers and production release, ensuring CAD, drawings, BOMs and engineering data are accurate and controlled.
- Work across Manufacturing, Procurement, Quality and suppliers, while providing technical guidance and contributing to improved engineering standards.

I’m in my final year doing Economics and I don’t know whether to apply for grad schemes now or do a masters first. What do you think?
Honest answer — it depends on where you want to end up. A lot of top grad schemes (Big 4, civil service, banking) don’t need a masters. Let’s look at the ones you’d be competitive for now, and we can decide if a masters actually adds anything.
Also worth knowing: most autumn 2026 applications are open now. Timing matters more than you think.

Grad scheme, placement, apprenticeship? Not sure what you want yet — that's fine. Your agent talks it through with you and turns "I have no idea" into a shortlist.
